M.A. Sattar Bhuiyan (Bengali: এম এ সাত্তার ভূঁইয়া; 17 March 1956 – 9 May 2007) was a Bangladeshi politician and President of Dhanmondi Thana Awami League. He was a nominated Awami League Candidate for 7th National Parliament Election in 1996 from Noakhali-2 constituency. He was also acting Mayor of Dhaka City Corporation in 2000.
Early life[edit]
Mr. Bhuiyan was born in a respected Muslim family of Kabilpur village under Shonaimuri Upazila of Noakhali District in the province of Bengal (now Bangladesh) to father Alhaj Ali Akbar Bhuiyan and mother Habiba Begum.
Mr. Bhuiyan married Aleya Begum in 1984 and is the father of four children. His only son Ahsan Habib Bhuiyan is a Barrister at law from the United Kingdom and also a politician from Awami League.[1]
Political career[edit]
M. A. Sattar Bhuiyan started his political career in student life being elected as a member of Rayer Bazar Union Student league, in 1972. He was an active member of Rayer Bazar Union Jubo League from 1974 to 1977. He had become the elected General Secretary of Rayer Bazar Union Jubo League from 1977 to 1982. In 1982 he was elected as the President of 17 No. Ward Baksal and member of Dhaka Metropolitan Baksal. He was the leader of joint Committee of Dhanmondi Thana of the three party alliances during the movement against undemocratic forces in 1990.
In 6th parliamentary election he contested from Dhaka-9 constituency from Baksal and supported by the Democratic Alliance. After Baksal was dissolved and merged into Awami League in 1992, he was elected as the president of executive committee of 48 No. Ward Awami League. In 1994 he participated in the Dhaka City Corporation election and was elected as a Commissioner of 48 No. Ward. He participated in 7th National Parliament Election in 1996 from Noakhali-2 constituency as a nominated candidate of Awami League. He performed the role of acting Mayor of Dhaka City Corporation in 2000. He had become the president of Dhanmondi Thana Awami League in 2007. During the emergency period in 2007, he organized continuing political movements at Russel Square, Panthapath to free Sheikh Hasina from imprisonment and to support the democratic movement nationwide.
Contribution in Liberation War 1971[edit]
M.A. Sattar Bhuiyan participated in the liberation war in 1971 as a young freedom fighter.
Imprisonment[edit]
Mr. Bhuiyan was arrested many times and jailed as a political prisoner. On 17 March 1996 he was sent to jail for his active role in the political movement against the BNP lead Government.

Death[edit]
Mr. Bhuiyan suffered a sudden heart attack on 7 May 2007 after accompanying Sheikh Hasina with a massive procession from airport to her house at road no.32 and died after 2 days on 9 May 2007 at hospital.
