History[edit]

Founded in 1907, the ”Syrian Students Conference” became the first Student Christian Movement in India. On the 6th of May 1922, a special convention of the Students organisation residing in the Jacobite Syrian Church was convened at the Cheruthottukunnel St. George Church of Angamaly diocese{Pallikkara Region}, under the initiative of our Valiya Thirumeni, and it was renamed as “Mar Gregorios Syrian Students Association” (MGSSA). This made it the first organisation to be named after Mor Gregorios of Parumala.

In 1960, MGSSA and St Thomas Syrian Students Movement merged with Jacobite Church, forming Mar Gregorios Orthodox Christian Student Movement(MGOCSM). In 1972, the churches divided apart, thus splitting the Jacobite Church and MGOCSM once again.

From 1972 the organisation had a shunt growth as most of the units became inactive and many became non-existent. After 1976 the student movement underwent different situations, the name of the movement was changed first to SOSMI (Syrian Orthodox Students Movement of India), and in 2002 to JASSMI (Jacobite Syrian Students Movement of India). The Holy Episcopal Synod of Jacobite Syrian Christian Church held at Puthencruz in the Month of June 2009 decided to change the name of the Organisation to MGJSM( Mor Gregoriose Jacobite Syrian Students Movement), possessing similarities to their first name.
