The International Museum of Contemporary Art (MIAC) is a collection of works by Canarian, national and international artists housed in the Castle of San Jose,[1] in the capital of the island of Lanzarote, Arrecife, Spain, originally a fortress built for protection against pirate invasions.[2]
History[edit]
The museum is located in Puerto Naos and the castle was built by Carlos III to defend the island's inhabitants against pirates.
Centuries later, the artist César Manrique refurbished it to establish the International Museum of Contemporary Art, MIAC, which became the first contemporary art museum in the Canary Islands [3] on the 9th of December 1976[4].
Collection[edit]
The museum was created to keep together and exhibit the most relevant contemporary works.[5]
The works are mainly from the period between 1950 and 1980 and have characteristics of abstract art, modern sculpture, kinetic art, and geometric abstraction.
The building has several rooms where works by artists such as Joan Miró, Antoni Tàpies, and Eusebio Sempere are exhibited. It also has a section dedicated to the works of Pancho Lasso, who was originally from Lanzarote.[6]
Another room in the MIAC is the Canary artist one, where they can appreciate works by the museum creator, César Manrique. Some works done by the artist in the 1980s have been recently added to the collection.[7]
The front courtyard at the entrance of the castle is also used for outdoor sculpture and design exhibitions. The lower part of the building has been adapted into a restaurant where typical Canarian dishes can be enjoyed, along with panoramic views of the port and docks. Additionally, on occasions, there are dinner shows.
