The MLBB M2 World Championship, commonly known as M2 or the M2 World Championships was the second edition of the Mobile Legends World Championships, an esports tournament for the game Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. It was held from January 18 to January 24, 2021 in Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore.[1]
The annual international tournament was organized by MLBB Game Developers Moonton, in partnership with several sponsors including the Singapore’s Cybersports and Online Gaming Association and the Singapore Tourism Board.[2]
In a grueling best-of-seven series, the Philippines' Bren Esports defeated Myanmar's Burmese Ghouls with a score of 4-3 to become the second World Champions and the first Filipino team to accomplish this title.
Karl Gabriel "KarlTzy" Nepomuceno won the finals MVP for the event.
Background
M2 was the second iteration of the Mobile Legends World Championship and was held for the first time in Singapore. Compared to its previous iteration, this tournament only featured 12 teams with some qualifying through their Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Professional League or MPL, and some through non-MPL qualifier tournaments. These teams were all announced on the same day with their roster on December 7, 2020. M2 featured 10 Asian Teams, 1 Latin American Team, and 1 CIS Team. [3]
A notable fact is that in every edition of the World Championship, an exclusive battle pass skin and the champion skin will be released. The pass featured the skin of Aldous, a fighter hero, alongside other rewards. After winning, Bren Esports chose Lancelot as their champion skin.[4]
Coronavirus
Due to the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, initial plans to conduct the tournament in 2020 were postponed. Eventually, Moonton decided to hold the second iteration of the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang World Championships in Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore on January 2021 in a closed-door event where fans only got to tune in virtually from their homes. [5][2]
Qualified teams and rosters
Qualified teams
Teams wishing to qualify for the M2 World Championships primarily do so by competing through their country's Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Professional League or commonly known as "MPL". However, regional qualifiers in the CIS Region and Brazil were also held to broaden the reach of the tournament. Japan and Cambodia, on the other hand, were directly invited to participate. [citation needed]
The defending World Champions, EVOS Esports, were not able to reclaim a back-to-back championship due to them being eliminated during the upper bracket quarterfinals in MPL Indonesia Season 6 that was ultimately won by RRQ Hoshi in 5 games.[citation needed]
