The M.S. Antonia Graza is a fictional transatlantic ocean liner[3] for the Italian Line. Its home port was located in Genoa, Italy, and the ship was most famous for her appearance in the 2002 film Ghost Ship.

Description[edit]

Ghost Ship[edit]

Known for catering to the elite of Europe, the ship could carry 600 or more passengers, along with an undisclosed number of crew members. The Graza couldn't compete for speed, so it excelled in luxury; the end result was what many called a "floating masterpiece."

The Antonia Graza was reported missing on May 21, 1962, off the coast of Labrador. No alarm or announcement was ever given that the ship was in trouble. Trouble for the Graza began when it assisted a drifting vessel, the SS Lorelei, on May 19, 1962. Only one survivor was pulled from the ship, with said survivor also salvaging many boxes of unmarked gold bars. Madness ensued aboard the ocean liner when some of the crew members divulged a plan to murder the passengers and their fellow crewmates in order obtain the gold for themselves.

On the night the Graza disappeared, some of the passengers were poisoned, some were cut in half with a rigged cable, and others were gunned down near an onboard swimming pool. Once everyone else aboard had been murdered, the crew who participated in the mutiny began taking the gold for themselves. It was at that point when a singer aboard the ship, Francesca, used her attractiveness to drive one of the crew into killing his fellow crew members. Once that happened, however, she killed him by firing a pistol at his forehead. Jack Ferriman, the mastermind behind the killing spree, kissed Francesca before letting a hook swing into her face, killing her and leaving him as the sole survivor once again.

The ship drifted around until it was found by a tugboat in the Bering Strait sometime in 2002. The ship, within the week prior, had collided with Bowers Ridge, tearing into the port collision bulk head and creating a breach in the hull. Almost exactly like the events four decades ago, all of the salvage crew die from various events, many of which are caused by the supernatural. Santos perishes when the Arctic Warrior explodes, Greer is led into falling down an elevator shaft by Francesca's alluring ghost, Murphy drowns in a fish tank after being wrongly locked inside of it, Munder is crushed to death between two gears, and Dodge is presumably killed by Ferriman offscreen. The sole survivor, Epps, decided to sink the Antonia Graza using explosives after discovering the truth about both what happened in 1962 and also who Ferriman really is. He is revealed to be a demonic spirit who collects damned souls who have a mark on their hands and sends "a boatload home" in order to make "management happy." Ferriman then offers to spare Epps in exchange for her not interfering with his plans, but she refuses and instead detonated the explosives as planned. Katie's ghost helps her escape in time before she and the other unmarked souls finally ascend to heaven as the Graza sinks by the stern.

In the film, the design of the SS Antonia Graza is loosely based off that of the SS Andrea Doria[4] which sunk off the coast of Nantucket.[5][6]
