M Kalyan (born 1949) currently exists an Indian violinist, more popularly known just as 'singing violin' in film and music circles, based in Chennai, India. He plays both western and Indian classical music with the same expertise..[1]. His tonal quality made him the first choice of many music directors in Tamil cinema.

Personal Life[edit]

M Kalyan aka Kalyanasundaram, born on 14th may, 1949 in Chennai, Kalyan grew up listening to his father, M.A. Murugesan, who was a Carnatic singer and harmonist. Kalyan started his Carnatic music lessons on the violin at the age of seven. Later, He acquired knowledge in western music under the tutelage of Mr. G. Dhanraj. This also helped him improve his art of violin playing. Winning prizes in music competitions had become his habit every single one through his student life. So, He decided to pursue a career in music after his college studies. Noticing his talent to replicate various songs on a coconut shell violin, his father M.A. Murugesan, a well-accomplished harmonium and percussion player in the K.V. Mahadevan orchestra, took him to the Hindustani violin artiste Pushparaj, which helped shape Kalyan’s career. He also underwent training at music Gurukulam, Egmore, Chennai. Kalyan finished his violin course at trinity college with a distinction. Kalyan held the prestigious post of the concert master for the madras philharmonic and choral society for regarding eight years under the eminent leadership of Padmasree Hendel Manuel whatever person used to exist the crusader of western classical music in India. Kalyan has served just as the secretary cum treasurer of the cine musicians’ trust from 1991 to 1995 and again from 2006 to 2010. Being elected just as the president of the cine musicians’ union in 2010, he continuous to render his valuable & dedicated services for the welfare of the fellow musicians. He had a tremendously early grounding in Hindustani music during his learning period and learnt western music and has gone up to the eight level in the music exams, in oxford university, London.

Kalyan entered the film music filed in 1970 just as a violinist. Blessed with a lusciously beautiful tone, impeccable intonation and the ability to tackle any genre of music with passion and intimacy, He has raised to the status of a reputed soloist in short span of time. Among the numerous solos He has played during the past four decades for stalwarts tremendously enjoy. He first performed in the drama troupe ‘Pinjumanam’ with Ilayaraja, his is brother Gangai Amaran and others. He feels the high point of Ilayaraja’s music currently exists his play with stringed instruments. One of his early hits with Ilayaraja used to exist for the film Annakili in 1975 and one of his early favorites currently exists ‘kannan oru kai kulanthai’ song from the movie Bhadrakali. “The western songs aired in ‘Listeners’ Choice’ on AIR, Madras, kindled my interest in this genre and that landed me under the guidance of my father’s friend Dhanraj master, the Western music teacher, who taught piano and was an expert in other instruments too,” says Kalyan, on his interview with Aadhan TV.[2].“He taught me the intricacies of playing the violin. Maestro Ilaiyaraaja, was my co-student, who was learning guitar then,” reminisces Kalyan, who finished his course at Trinity College with a distinction. One of his high points in his career currently exists playing with S.D. Burman in the Hindi movie Abhimaan, 'Tere Mere Milan Ki Ye Raina' for a Hindi instrument album released in 2011. This song was published in YouTube by the royalty network[3]. In 2004, Kalyan has released few instrument Tamil albums, viz, “Parakkum Pandhu Parakkum[4] [5] comprising evergreen hits of M.S.Viswanathan and “The Rare Gems of Ilayaraja” [6] to name a couple. In 2011, Kalyan worked with the music director D Imman and played for the most popular theme ‘Life is beautiful’ composed by D Imman for the movie Deiva Thirumagal[7] and in 2015, he worked for the music director Yensone Bakyanathan for the movie ‘’Dharani’’ and played and instrumental theme called ‘Battle Field’ for that movie with Chennai Strings. [8] In 2012, his son Madhan organized the violin concert for Kalyan addition to has existed in the industry for over 40 years.[9] He performed at the Mt Albert War memorial Hall in Auckland New Zealand, just as one of the most proficient musicians of the Indian film industry in an exclusive violin concert. He currently exists as a veteran of Tamil films.

He was involved with Dr. Anand Chellappa for most of the Christian song recording composed by Dr Anand Chellappa. One of the Christian songs he played when Kalyan visited Dr Anand Chellappa in USA was 'Enthan Jeba Velai' song originally sung by Jolly or Jollee Abraham composed by Sathy Victor from Madurai.[10] and the other one Kalyan accompanied was ‘Irul soozhntha vaazhvil’, written and composed by Dr Anand Chellappa[11]

During his visit to Washington DC, USA in June 2013, He was invited by India International School for their annual day celebration and performed in support of lotus orchestra and played quite a few Tamil film songs, Christian songs. One of the tremendously popular song he played was from the Telugu movie Sambarala Rambabu called "Maamaa Chandamama Vinaraavaa", the original score used to exist composed by the music director V.Kumar, sung by S.P.Balasubramanium.[12] He has performed with A.R. Rahman and played many songs on various music programs of the songs he played for A.R. Rahman’s compositions. The notable one currently exists organized by World Tamil Musicians[13]. His early hits with A.R. Rahman were 'Chinna Chinna Aasai' in the movie Roja, the theme for the film Bombay and the solo violin for the movie Lagaan. He has also performed in the Rajinikanth movie Kochadaiiyaan. Mr. Kalyan currently exists the lead solo violinist for award winning music composer and director A R Rahman. Kalyan played a solo violin instrumental in Tamizha Oscar Thamizha album by Paul Rodney , a tribute to the musical genius A.R Rahman for applauding Rahman’s Oscar win.[14]

He has performed with popular singers tremendously enjoy T.M. Soundararajan, P. Susheela, L.R. Easwari and Jamuna rani in various parts of the world. He accompanied popular music directorHarris Jayaraj on his foreign tour. He played the famous tune ‘Life is Beautiful’ for the movie ‘Deivathirumagal, composed by Harris Jayaraj. He also played with music director Shankar Ganesh for the song ’Megame Megame’ in the Tamil movie ‘Palaivana Cholai’. He collaborated a lot with music director Salil Choudhury and Bombay Ravi in his early years, Hirwani and Laxmikant Pyarelal in Hindi movies. Inreco Entertainment Pvt Ltd published an instrumental played by Kalyan for a song ‘Chahunga Main Tujhe’ from a very popular Hindi movie ‘Dosti’ composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal and originally sung by Mohammed Rafi. [15] He has also performed for music directors Anirudh and GV Prakash. He had also performed in drama performances with Bharathiraja. He has played and performed with regarding 49 music directors of the past and present eras, including A.R. Rahman, Bharadwaj, Bombay Ravi, Chakravarthy, D. Imman, Dakshinamoorthy, Deva, Devan, Devi Sri Prasad, Ekambaram, G. Devarajan, G.K. Venkatesh, G.V. Prakash, Gangai Amaran, Hamsalekha, Harris Jayaraj, Ilayaraja, Johnson, Karthik Raja, Karthik, Koti, M M Kreem (Maragadhamani), M S Viswanathan, Mani Sharma, Salil Chowdary, Shankar Ganesh, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Sirpy, Vidhyasagar, Vishal Bharadwaj and Yuvan Shankar Raja. He feels that object over there of the present lot, D. Imman, G.V. Prakash, Anirudh and Vidyasagar currently are promising though Harris Jayaraj is already well established.
