Macbeth is one of the first heavy metal bands in the former German Democratic Republic. From 1987 to 1989 the band was called Caiman after Macbeth was banned by the GDR authorities after a performance in the overcrowded city garden in Erfurt, Thuringia, monitored by the police and the Stasi.

After the suicide of their singer Wittenburg, Macbeth / Caiman separated for the first time in 1989. A first comeback in 1993 ended with the death of their drummer. In 2002 the band got back together for the second time.[1]
