Machine Girl (occasionally stylized as machin3gir1) is a Brooklyn-based Digital Hardcore duo comprising frontman Matt Stephenson and percussionist Sean Kelly. Originally formed as a solo project, in 2018, the project became a duo, with Stephenson recruiting Kelly to play live drums on 2018's The Ugly Art.[1]
History
Stephenson and Kelly began performing together in the eighth grade, eventually going their own separate ways after high school and performing with their own various projects. In 2010, Stephenson first came up with the idea of Machine Girl, however, it was not until 2013 that he first released any material under the name.[1]
Over the course of the next year, Stephenson released four separate EPs under the Machine Girl moniker, culminating with a debut studio album, WLFGRL. The project became a duo in 2018 with the release of The Ugly Art, which, for the first time in the history of Machine Girl, featured live recorded drums.
Musical Style & Influences
The duo's style has been described as "Equally apocalyptic and ecstatic"[2], and most often as Digital Hardcore, Punk, Hardcore Breaks, UK Bass, Electro-Industrial, Breakcore. In 2019, Kerrang! listed them as one of "5 Bands Expanding The Definition of Hardcore", saying of them, "the NYC duo Machine Girl play a particularly punky and ferocious breed of the electronic sub-genre breakcore that could easily pass for hardcore when they rip it live, and it’s sort of like Death Grips, but with grindier rhythms and a vocal delivery that’s more punk than hip-hop."[3]
The duo boasts a wide range of influences on both their writing process and production philosophy. These include King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Meshuggah, Death Grips, and DJ Rashad among others.
