Mackenzie Rath (born March 1, 2001) is an American professional soccer player who most recently played as a goalkeeper for San Diego Wave FC of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). She played college soccer for the Minnesota State Mavericks, where she set the program record for career saves.
Early life
Rath was born to Bill and Lynne Rath and raised in Pierre, South Dakota. She played youth soccer for local club Oahe FC.[2] Rath was a multi-sport athlete at T. F. Riggs High School, participating in football and track and field as well as soccer. With the soccer team, she was a four-time all-conference and three-time all-state honoree en route to two state championships.[2]
After her final season of high school soccer, Rath joined T.F. Riggs' football team as a kicker.[3] She won the 2018 state title as a member of the squad and became the first girl to play and score in a South Dakota high school football championship match.[4]
College career
In her freshman year with the Minnesota State Mavericks soccer team, Rath was one of Alexa Rabune's backups.[5] She appeared in 6 games, directly contributing to shutouts in half of her matches played.[2] The following season, Rath appeared in Minnesota State's sole game of the year before the remainder of the season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Once the Mavericks returned to play in 2021, Rath stepped up and became the team's first-choice goalkeeper. She started 17 matches and sported both the best goals-against average and save percentage in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.[2] The Mavericks were able to advance to the NCAA tournament that year, where Rath made five saves in her team's first-round win over Oklahoma Baptist.[6] Rath was named second-team All-NSIC and second-team All-Region at the end of the season.[2][7]
The following year, Rath built upon her success. She started a career-high 22 games, landed a spot on the All-NSIC first team,[2] and was named the NSIC Goalkeeper of the Year.[7][8] Rath capped off her college career with a 2023 season that won her a place on the Division II All-American second team, her first national honor.[9] Her 13 shutouts ranked second overall across the United States' Division II programs.[2] She also recorded her first collegiate goal contribution on October 1, 2023, an assist in a victory over Minnesota Duluth.[10] Across her four years of college, Rath garnered 7 conference goalkeeper of the week honors and also set the Mavericks' program record for all-time saves.[2][9]
Club career
Rath registered for the 2024 NWSL Draft, but ultimately was not selected by any team.[11] She then chose to sign in the amateur United Premier Soccer League with Minnesota Aurora FC's second team. In Rath's single season with the Aurora, she tallied 6 starts and helped contribute to an undefeated regular season.[12]
On September 14, 2024, Rath signed her first professional deal, an injury replacement contract, with NWSL team San Diego Wave FC.[1] She did not make an appearance during her short-term stint with the Californian club.[13]
