Madame Nhu Vietnamese, also known as Madame Nhu, is a Vietnamese restaurant chain based in Sydney, Australia. The chain is known for its slow-cooked phở noodle soup.[1]

History[edit]

Madame Nhu's first store opened in 2007 in Sydney CBD.[2] Formerly trading as Summerrolls,[3] it gained wide attention after being voted "Sydney's Best Vietnamese" in 2008 by The City News.[4]

Named after chef-founder Nhu Nguyen, Madame Nhu is also a reference to the controversial Vietnamese political figure Trần Lệ Xuân, who is popularly known as the de facto First Lady of South Vietnam from 1955 to 1963.[5] The controversial namesake is intended to present "a more nuanced and complex" story of the historic Madame Nhu during a period of significant cultural and culinary development in Vietnam.[5]

Madame Nhu's store design is said to pay tribute to the rapidly disappearing French villas of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam with the use of yellow plastering, tropical plants and French shutters.[3]

Locations[edit]

As of August 2022, Madame Nhu operates stores in Surry Hills, Enmore, Westfield Hornsby and Westfield Chatswood.[6]

Product[edit]

Madame Nhu specializes in Vietnamese phở noodle soup and summer rolls.[7] Some outlets also offer Asian beers and cocktails.[8] The chain emphasizes on its fresh food,[1] small menu,[9] simple set-up and quick-and-easy service.[10]
