Madeleine Milburn is a literary, television, and film agency based in London, United Kingdom. Established in 2012, the agency’s profile rose with the success of Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman in 2017.[1] Founder Madeleine Milburn won Literary Agent of the Year at the 2018 British Book Awards. [2]

History[edit]

After graduating from university Madeleine Milburn was employed as an assistant at A.P. Watt, the oldest literary agency in the world, where she worked with authors such as Zadie Smith and Philip Pullman. She also started an events company before founding her agency in 2012.[3]

The agency achieved global success and prominence through its championship of Gail Honeyman’s debut novel Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine. The book was the subject of an eight-way auction on the eve of the 2015 Frankfurt Book Fair and was sold to HarperFiction, which announced that it would make 2017 “the year of the Oliphant.” The title went into the Sunday Times Top 10 before Christmas, with nearly 290,000 copies sold across all formats before paperback publication. The book had sold more than 800,000 copies by the time it won the Books Are My Bag Readers' Choice Award.[4] Honeyman was also awarded the Costa first novel award. [5] The novel received widespread attention and praise, with favourable reviews running in The Guardian, The Scotsman, and The Irish Times. It was named both Debut Book of the Year and Book of the Year at The British Book Awards. It was also awarded Marketing Strategy of the Year. [6] The novel has sold more than 3 million copies, and the rights for the film adaptation were bought by Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine production company, with Harry Bradbeer and Georgia Pritchett hired as director and screenwriter. [7]

The agency has also had successes with Black Cake by Charmaine Wilkerson,[8] The Doll Factory by Elizabeth Macneal, [9] The Maid by Nita Prose, [10] The Widow by Fiona Barton, [11] and The Burning Girls by C.J. Tudor, [12] all of which are in development for film and television adaptation. Other bestsellers in the agency’s roster include The Authenticity Project by Clare Pooley, [13] Wintering by Katherine May, [14] and A Lady’s Guide to Fortune Hunting by Sophie Irwin. [15] Madeleine Milburn also represents multiple bestselling author C.L. Taylor [16] and the Jhalak Prize-winning graphic novelist Sabba Khan. [17]

Between 2013 and 2020 the agency operated out of an office in Shepherd Market, Mayfair. Success and expansion saw the organisation outgrowing those premises and relocating to The Factory in Clapham.[18] Subsequent to this the agency expanded its children’s and YA department under Chloe Seager. [19] In 2022 literary agent Hayley Steed organised a charity auction to raise funds for refugees of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. [20]

As of 2022, The Bookseller has included Madeleine Milburn in its list of the 150 Most Influential People in the Book Trade in every year since 2017.[21] [22]

Madeleine Milburn Mentorship Programme[edit]

The Madeleine Milburn Mentorship Programme was launched in 2020 to champion new authors from underrepresented backgrounds. Successful applicants undergo a six-month programme of tutoring by authors, editors, international rights and book-to-film agents. Each mentee is guaranteed representation by an agent.[23]

Alumni of the programme include Ronali Collings,[24] Sophie Jo, [25] Nigar Alam, [26] and Francesca Robbins. [27]
