Mahfouz Marei Mubarak bin Mahfouz (Arabic: محفوظ مرعي مبارك بن محفوظ) (styled His Excellency Mahfouz Marei Mubarak bin Mahfouz, Lord and Baron of Abernethy, GCMLJ, FRSA) (born 14 December 1969) is a Saudi Arabian businessman and philanthropist living in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and in the United Kingdom.

Early life[edit]

Mahfouz Marei Mubarak bin Mahfouz was born at Makkah, Saudi Arabia, the second son of Sheikh Marei Mubarak Mahfouz bin Mahfouz (Arabic: مرعي بن مبارك بن هادي بن محفوظ) and his wife Sheikha Khadejah Omar Abdullah bin Mahfouz. He was educated at the Faculty of Economics and Administration, King Abdulaziz University (KAU), Saudi Arabia graduating with an LLB Hons degree (dissertation: The Labour Law in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, 1993); and the Faculty of Law, American University, United Kingdom graduating with an LLM degree (dissertation: The International Commercial Arbitration and Rules of Islamic Shariah, 1997).[1]

Marriage and children[edit]

Mahfouz Marei Mubarak bin Mahfouz, married at Makkah 23 July 1992 Faizah Abdulaziz Alqabbaa (born 12 September 1969), ninth daughter of Abdulaziz bin Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Alqabbaa, Prince of Dhabya and his wife Sharifah Hamdan Rashed Alghamdi. They have four children, two sons and two daughters: Balqis Mahfouz Marei bin Mahfouz (born 29 November 1994); Mohammad Mahfouz Marei bin Mahfouz (born 29 February 1996); Suliman Mahfouz Marei bin Mahfouz (born 15 March 1998); and Albatol Mahfouz Marei bin Mahfouz (born 31 August 2001).[2]

Business interests[edit]

Mahfouz Marei Mubarak bin Mahfouz is the Chief Executive Officer of the Marei Bin Mahfouz Group (MBM) from 2001. The Marei Bin Mahfouz Group (MBM) is a commercial and industrial group founded by (his father) Sheikh Marei Mubarak Mahfouz bin Mahfouz in 1975 and has its headquarters in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. It specialises in hotels, manufacturing and trade services throughout the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Middle East.[3][4] The group is ranked among the top 25 Saudi companies.[5]

He is also a Director of Bin Mahfouz International Law Firm, Jeddah;[6] World Trade Centre, Makkah; Kindah Investment Group, Makkah; Jeddah International Exhibition Company; United Aluminum Company, Saudi Arabia; Jotun Saudi Group, Jeddah; and Saudi Carbonite Company.

Charitable activities[edit]

Mahfouz Marei Mubarak bin Mahfouz is the Founder of The Mahfouz Foundation, which is a registered charity in the United Kingdom (Registered Charity Number 1149924) and was established 27 November 2012 to promote and advance the education of the public in the United Kingdom in the culture, history, language, literature and institutions of the Middle East.[7][8]

He is Vice President of the British Forces Foundation (whose Patron is HRH The Prince of Wales, KG);[9] Honorary Patron of The Queen Elizabeth Castle of Mey, Scotland;[10] Member of The Sandhurst Trust; Friend of The Royal Marsden, London, United Kingdom; and Platinum Friend of the Society of Genealogists. He is also a member of The Cavalry and Guards Club and the Guards Polo Club.

Awards and honours[edit]

Mahfouz Marei Mubarak bin Mahfouz was elected a Foundation Fellow[11] of Pembroke College, University of Oxford 10 October 2012 (having been inducted as a Member of the Senior Common Room of Pembroke College, University of Oxford 23 May 2012). The Fellowship includes HM Abdullah II, King of Jordan and HRH Prince Bandar bin Sultan of Saudi Arabia. He was also elected a Member of both the Vice-Chancellor’s Circle of the University of Oxford in 2012, and the Vice-Chancellor’s Circle of the University of Cambridge in 2013. He was elected a Fellow (Life) of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, known as the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA) in 2012. He was awarded Knight Grand Cross in the Companionate of Merit of the Military and Hospitaller Order of St Lazarus of Jerusalem (GCMLJ) 11 June 2013. And he was elected the first Bredon Fellow of Wolfson College, University of Cambridge in a ceremony 1 July 2013.[12] He was admitted to the Freedom of the City of London 5 December 2013.[13]

Mahfouz Garden and Mahfouz Building[edit]

The Mahfouz Garden and the Mahfouz Building at Pembroke College, University of Oxford were named after HE Mahfouz bin Mahfouz, after his donation to the college's Building Bridges Campaign.[14] The garden and building are situated on the corner of Littlegate Street and Brewster Street, next to the Bannister Building (named after Roger Bannister) and are part of the Rokos Quad complex.

Arms[edit]

Mahfouz Marei Mubarak bin Mahfouz is the holder of the Lordship and Barony of Abernethy in Scotland. He was granted Arms at the Court of the Lord Lyon in Edinburgh 25 November 2011.

Arms: Argent, on a fess vert a sword of two points with rounded ends proper hilted and pommelled or points to dexter in chief a lion passant gules armed and langued azure in base a pair of scales gules. Motto: For God and Country.[15]
