Maila Carboni
Maila Carboni (born 21st September 1996 in Hamilton, Canada) is an Italian-Canadian professional football player who plays as striker for Cypriot professional football club Apollon Limassol.
Career
2012-2017: Youth Career
Maila Carboni started playing football at age 6 in Stoney Creek, Ontario.
Maila began her competitive football career playing for Mt. Hamilton Y.S.C in 2004. She moved to Erin Mills Eagles Y.S.C. in 2010 to play OYSL (Ontario Youth Soccer League) at the provincial level, where she was one of the top scorers.[1] Maila had a brief stint with the Ontario Provincial team as well under Joe Nucifora. During her time with Erin Mills the team participated in international tournaments, winning the NEWSS in Long Island and being the top scorer, finishing second at the Disney Cup. She accepted a full athletic scholarship at University of Arkansas at Little Rock for the year 2014-15.[2]
2014-18: University Career – Ontario Women’s League – Ligue 1 Ontario
After a rookie season at UALR where she scored an average of 1 goal every 65 minutes of play, Maila decided to move back to hometown Hamilton Ontario and was recruited by McMaster University Women Varsity coach Brett Mosen.[3] Maila played 3 seasons at McMaster in the OUA (Ontario University Athletics)[3][4][5] being named all Ontario Second Team striker in the 2017-18 year.[6] Maila was the Mac team’s leading scorer for the last two seasons. Maila wasn't able to play in the 2018 university season, due to circumstances related to a nagging small problem on her back.
As customary for all university players, Maila played in the summer in the U21 OWSL (Ontario Women’s Soccer League).[7] For the first four seasons (2014-17) Maila played with the St. Catharines Jets, under coach Andrew Vitaterna.[8] Maila was second best scorer in Ontario in 2015 and 2017, best scorer in Ontario in 2016, winning the Golden Boot.[9] Her team won the Ontario Women’s Soccer League in 2016[10]and 2017[11] also securing Ontario Cup victory in 2016.[12]
In 2019 Maila joined the fast-growing Ligue 1 Ontario league, where after a brief stint for Hamilton Utd,[13] she moved to Oakville Blue Devils, prior to signing for the Serie B team Roma CF in Italy in the summer of 2019.[14]
2019-Present Professional Career
Maila started the Serie B 2019-20 season with Roma CF in the Italian second division (Serie B Femminile).[15][16][17][18][19] In her rookie season Maila was leading scorer for her team until midway into January 2020, when she left the team to go play in Sweden. While in the process of moving from Italy to Sweden, due to the arrival of COVID-19 Maila was forced to go back to Canada and did not play for the remainder of the football season.
In July 2020 she was approached by AEL Limassol (Cyprus) and signed a contract to play in the Cyprus Women’s First division (top division).[20][21] After leading AEL with her goals[22][23][24] (was leading scorer),[25] Maila has signed a contract to continue her stint in Cyprus with the first place team, Apollon Limassol, starting January 2021.[26]
Style of Play
Maila is a fully ambidextrous player.[27] Maila has played as a twin striker in 4-4-2 and 3-5-2 formations, as well as centre forward and left/right winger in 3-4-3 and 4-3-3 formations.
Outside of professional Football
Maila was born in Hamilton Ontario on Sept. 21st 1996. Her parents Giovanni and Joanne are both secondary school teachers. Maila has a brother, Massimiliano (Max). Maila graduated from McMaster University with a double Major in Biology and Environmental Science in 2019. Maila enjoys trekking and long walks in natural settings, away from the city centres. Maila is an avid reader and a strong believer in self-improvement. Maila spends a lot of time listening to music.
