Main Puteri is one of the authentic arts in the state of Kelantan. It is one of the most popular methods of traditional medicine in Kelantan-Pattani Malay society for centuries. It is acknowledged that it is difficult to distinguish between the aspects of "performing arts" and "medical ritual" in this art because there is a close relationship between the two elements. There are various versions related to the origins of Main Puteri that can be used as a source of information, but due to the lack of accurate records then the oral source is the only one available.[1]
Main Puteri is made up of two main characters, Tuan Puteri and Tok Minduk who play the fiddle and are accompanied by the beating of gendang ibu and gendang anak. When the Princess forgets herself, the subtle spirit will permeate into the Princess's body and the Tok Minduk will question the subtle being to determine the cause of the disease.
Main Puteri will be played for one to three nights for the purpose of treating diseases caused by supernatural beings, loss of spirit, internal energy imbalance, and also by wind disturbances (unfulfilled desires). Main Puteri is accompanied by musical instruments similar to Mak Yong such as fiddle (three-stringed instrument), two-headed drum, and tetawak.
