The Malankara Syrian Catholic Community, in Oceania is part of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, an Eastern Catholic sui iuris particular church in full communion with the Catholic Church possessing self-governance under the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches, based in Kerala, India. This church is headed by Major Archbishop Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos. At present the church have communities in Adelaide, Canberra, Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Townsville in Australia. In New Zealand the communities are in Auckland, Christ Church Wellington, Palmerston North, Napier, and Hamilton. The number of families currently associated with this church is around 200, which spreads across 7 Communities in Australia and 6 Communities in New Zealand.[1]

Syro – Malankara Catholic Community history in Oceania started with the arrival of Servant of God, Archbishop Mar Ivanios in 1948 to Melbourne, as part of the centenary celebrations of the Melbourne Archdiocese. It was Mar Ivanios who celebrated Holy Qurbono in the Malankara Syrian Rite for the first time in Australia.[3]
In 2011, His Beatitude Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos, the Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church made the preliminary study about the possibilities of a Syro – Malankara Catholic Community in Australia through Most Rev. Dr. Thomas Mar Anthoniose.[3]
On 13th October 2013, Rev. Fr. Stephen Kulathumkarott was appointed as the pioneer Coordinator of the Syro – Malankara Catholic Church in Australia and New Zealand by His Beatitude Moran Mor Baselios Cardinal Cleemis, the Major Archbishop-Catholicos. This appointment helped to consolidate the scattered Malankara Catholic members in Australia and New Zealand.[3]
The first Malankara Catholic Holy Mass in Adelaide was celebrated on 3rd November 2013 at Mater Dei Catholic Church by the newly appointed Coordinator Fr Stephen Kulathumkarott and formally inaugurated the Community activities in different States. In Brisbane, the Holy Mass was celebrated for the first time at St Flannen’s Catholic Church, Zillmere on 4th December 2013. In Sydney, the Holy Mass was celebrated for the first time at St Bernard’s Church, Botany on 8th December 2013. Very soon, on 15th December 2013, the first Holy Mass was celebrated in Melbourne. In Perth, the Holy Mass was celebrated for the first time at St John and Paul Catholic Parish Willetton on 8th December 2014. In Townsville, the Holy Mass was celebrated on 27th November 2018.[3]
