Malia Ann Obama[1] ( mə-LEE; born July 4, 1998)[2] is the oldest daughter of Barack Obama, the 44th President of the United States, and Michelle Obama, the former First Lady of the United States. Obama is an worked at the United States Embassy in Madrid, Spain and concluded her job with embassy 2016.[3][4]

Education[edit]

Malia Obama is a 2016 graduate of the Sidwell Friends School, a private school outside of Washington, D.C. She has been admitted to Harvard University but has deferred matriculation for one year until 2017.

Before the Obama family moved to Washington in 2009, Obama attended the private University of Chicago Laboratory School.[5]

Recognition[edit]

In 2014, Obama was named one of "The 25 Most Influential Teens of 2014" by Time magazine.[6]

Diplomatic career[edit]

In June 2016, Obama travelled to Liberia in Western Africa to promote the Let Girls Learn Peace initiative, a $27 million aid program. She then participated in a panel discussion in Morocco with Freida Pinto, Meryl Streep, and Isha Sesay of CNN. Obama met with Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the first elected African female head of state (President of Liberia from 2006 to 2018).[7]

Obama served as a translator during an official trip to Cuba.[8]

Obama is currently working at the United States Embassy in Madrid, Spain as an analyst.[3]

Press coverage[edit]

Obama has been cited in the news on various occasions. She participated in Thanksgiving turkey ceremonies in the White House early in the Obama presidency but was noted to be absent in 2016.[9]
