Malik Muhammad Arif (Urdu Punjabi Pashto Balochi Sindhi ملک محمد عارف ) (December 9, 1948 – April 16, 2010) was born in Quetta Pakistan. His father, Malik Ghulam Hussain Awan, who belonged to Sialkot, had migrated to Quetta in 1936 during British India rule. He belonged to Awan tribes. His early life was spent in Quetta Cantt. He completed his early education at Govt. Sandeman High School, Govt. Technical High School Quetta, and then Govt. Science College Quetta. He joined Pakistan Television Corporation (PTV) in 1974 as a lightman. After a career of about 30 years, he died serving as a News Cameraman/Journalist in a suicide bomb blast.
Political career
He was a great admirer of the late Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and was an active member of the PPP (Pakistan Peoples Party). After the judicial assassination of ZA Bhutto, he left active politics but remained with the party. During the martial law of military dictator Zia ul Haq, he raised his voice for the freedom of his colleagues who were imprisoned and sentenced to jail and lashes. He was successful in getting his colleagues released from those sentences. The twice-elected Prime Minister and famous leader Benazir Bhutto always counted him among her close associates in Quetta.
Media and journalism
During his career, he worked mostly for news and current affairs and travelled across the country. He also worked on various documentaries besides countless news and current affairs programs. He was kidnapped in 1995 and held in Kandhar for two months while travelling to Central Asian countries on an official mission. He was also abducted, and his camera was broken once while shooting illegal arms and bodyguards in Quetta city. His career also includes service with Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), (Public relations agency of the Pakistan Army), with whom he participated in various operations in troubled areas and war zones. Military operations were his passion; he always volunteered to go to the front line. After the end of his service, he joined SAMAA TV in 2008. Despite various threats to his life, he refused to leave Quetta when almost 100,000 people had left Balochistan due to the deteriorating law and order situation after the assassination of Nawab Akbar Bugti in 2006.
Death
On Friday, April 16, 2010, at about 10:00, when he was covering the death of a target-killed person at Civil Hospital Quetta, he stopped a suspected person who was trying to enter the mourning public, and that person blew himself up, causing his death on the spot. Lashker-e-Jhangvi Archived 2013-01-26 at Archive.today, a banned terrorist organisation, accepted responsibility for this attack. Witnesses revealed that the number of killings would have been much higher if Arif had not stopped that person from entering the hospital building. People of Quetta city and journalists across the country mourned his death and protested against terrorism. He is survived by four sons, a daughter, and a widow. President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani, Interior Minister Rehman Malik, MQM Chairman Altaf Hussain, and Sindh Information Minister Shazia Marri expressed great sorrow at Malik Arif's death.
