Management Lessons from Movies is a Self-help book by writer Gokul Santhanam. The book covers 100 management principles explained through World Cinema. Gokul chose movies across various genres and languages, explains why the movie is important and how the readers can benefit through these management principles. The book was first published in 2017 and it also recommends 200 world movies that could be watched.

Summary[edit]

Gokul writes that learning is a gradual process leading to change. A change in levels of knowledge, attitude, skills and behavior is often described as learning. From the gabble of a baby to the chirping of birds , from the swoosh of the waves, to the whispers of the leaves - Learning is everywhere! Why would movies be an exception then?

Movies are often associated with enjoyment, leisure and everything not serious. While there has been a gradual change in people’s perceptions, with movies evolving as a reflection of the socio-cultural milieu, the onion needs to be peeled to explore how movies are in fact a great medium to learn management fundamentals.

The book has 33 Sections. Each section talks about a World Movie, the plot summary and why watch the film. The interesting part of the section is also the management learning that one can derive from each of these movies. Each movie has at least two to five management principles covered. A total of 100 management principles are covered in all. The book also recommends 200 movies that could be watched and enjoyed by movie lovers. The book covers the following themes: Brand Building, Business Ethics, Leadership, Individual Development, Business Strategy, Organizational culture, Performance management, Process Excellence, Project management, Success Mantra and Team management. Gokul followed up this book with another similar themed book, Love and Marriage Lessons from Movies.

Reception[edit]

The book was released in Chennai Book Fair in 2017 and was widely appreciated[1]. Gokul has been conducting a series of non profit talk sessions in Indian Management schools themed around this book.
