Manasu paddannu kaani or But I did not mind is a 2000 Indian Telugu drama film starring Venu Thottempudi, Ramya Krishnan, and Raasi (Mantra).

Plot

The story features a boy named Venu (venu Thottempudi), grandson of a rich businessman, and a girl named Swati (Raasi) who works in a dance and music company as an assistant under Madhavi (Ramya Krishnan). The story has a love triangle.

Venu comes for a job interview at the same college where Swati and Madhavi are. On the way, he gets into a taxi cab, where he meets Swati, whom he later calls partner because she had shared the cost of the taxi with him. When Venu arrives at the college, he falls for Madhavi and later tries to become an assistant dance trainer. First, Venu is rejected for the job, but Madhavi changes her mind when she sees him training children. Meanwhile, Swati falls in love with Venu, who is already in love with Madhavi. A man named Prem, who is Madhavi and Swati's boss, also wants to be with Madhavi.

Swati's father comes to the university and thanks Madhavi for being a mentor to Swati. He asks if she would like a gift as guru dakshina. Guru dakshina is a traditional practice in Indian culture. People give gifts to teachers for teaching. Madhavi refuses to accept anything other than his blessing. She says that if she ever needs anything in the future, she will tell him.

The same day, Swati tells her father that she loves Venu. Her father thinks it is all right if they want to marry. When Swati's father indirectly asks Venu what he thinks of marriage, Venu, who does not know Swati loves him, tells Swati and her father that he loves Madhavi and hopes to marry her. This comes as a shock to Swati, but she accepts Venu's love for Madhavi.

Madhavi, Prem, Venu, and some other members of the college plan a trip to Dubai for a dance show. On that day, due to Prem's plans, Venu is not able to get on the airplane. But he tells Madhavi he loves her. Madhavi says she only loves her profession.

Venu then gets a message that his grandfather is ill and goes to see him. His grandfather says he hopes to see Venu get married before he dies. Venu tells him that he loves Madhavi and would only marry her, else remain unmarried.

Swati somehow comes to know about Venu's grandfather's wish and Venu's decision to marry Madhavi or no one. Swati pretends to be Madhavi and goes to see Venu's grandfather.

Meanwhile in Dubai, a sheik tells Madhavi that her dance team will only be allowed to perform in the show if she sleeps with him, but she refuses. The sheik leaves, but then Prem offers to marry Madhavi. He tells Madhavi that he would protect her from men like the sheik who think of performers like her as prostitutes, but she refuses.

One day, she realizes that she would find true love only in Venu. She comes back to India and calls Swati's father, who is happy that his daughter is adjusting well in Venu's house and is liked by all and dreams of marrying off his daughter to Venu after consulting his grandfather. Madhavi, unaware of the fact that Swati dreams of marrying Venu, asks Swati's father for the guru dakshina that he had offered and tells him that she wants him to fix his marriage with Swati's friend Venu as guru dakshina. With a heavy heart, Swati's father agrees to give Venu as guru dakshina to Madhavi. Then he tells his plan to his daughter, who, though heartbroken, accepts to act as a spoil brat and let Madhavi rule the hearts of the family members.

On the day of the marriage of Venu and Madhavi, Madhavi is beautifully dressed and made ready for marriage by Swati herself. On the way to the mandap, to the surprise of Swati, Madhavi asks her to hold the coconut that is supposed to be held by only the bride and then removes the band that is worn by the bride on her forehead and ties it on the forehead of Swati. Then she reveals all the secrets of Swati's true love for Venu and tells that Swati had shown the real spirit and meaning of love, which is sacrifice. Then both Venu and Swati are happily married, with Madhavi herself doing the work of the sister of the groom by tying the two knots of the mangalsutra to the bride's neck after the first one tied by the groom. In the climax, after the marriage is over, Madhavi leaves for abroad, and the newly married couple comes to see her off. At that time, Swati expresses her wish of being blessed by Madhavi, whom she considered as a guru and now a real elder/ a person with a heart made of gold /a person whom she would place at the topmost and respectful position in her life. Madhavi then sprinkles rice mixed with turmeric paste on Swati's head while Swati touches her feet and washes them with her tears (washing a person's feet is considered to be a sign of respect for the person in Indian culture. This is usually done to people who are elder to you or to a person to whom you want to show immense respect/gratitude). The story ends with Madhavi (Ramya Krishnan) saying that she lost a true love and a true lover and at the end cites the title of the story as her expression of feeling of extreme happiness hiding her sadness: "MANASA PADDANU KAANI" i.e. "BUT I DON'T MIND".

The main aim of the story is to make people understand that the true essence of love is not obsession but sacrifice. Love never confines; it gives you space.
