Manasvi Lingam (born 1987)[1] is an astrobiologist and scientific author at the Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Florida. He has authored many physics-based papers, primarily on astrobiology[2], but also including such topics as orbital mechanics,[3] evolutionary biology,[4] plasma physics,[5] and spacecraft propulsion.[6]

Lingam received his bachelor's degree from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, followed by a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Texas at Austin. Following postdoctoral work at Princeton and Harvard,[7] Lingam began work as an assistant professor at the Florida Institute of Technology,[8] which he selected because of the university's status as one of only two universities in the United States which currently offer undergraduate degrees in astrobiology.[9] Lingam currently studies a wide variety of physics- and space-related topics, such as Hamiltonian and Lagrangian models of plasmas, the effects of stellar processes on planetary habitability, and the hypothesis of panspermia.[10] He is also a strong supporter of the concept of solar sails.[11]

In addition to research, in 2021, Lingam co-authored Life in the Cosmos, a landmark textbook in undergraduate- and graduate-level astrobiology. The book's secondary author, former PCAST member Avi Loeb, is a frequent collaborator of Lingam's, with multiple papers co-authored by the pair in the Astrophysical Journal.[12][13] The book is notable for being a more accessible approach to astrobiology, while also treating extraterrestrial life as a possibility rather than an unlikely theory.[14] It received praise from Sara Seager, Michael Russell, and Charles Cockell, among other prominent astrobiologists.[15]

Lingam has been a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society since 2022.[16]
