Mankada T. Abdul Azeez Moulavi (July 15, 1931 – August 12, 2007) was a Muslim religious leader and famous Arabic and Islamic scholar from the Indian state of Kerala. He was a former president of Kerala Nadvathul Mujahideen and was Indian Union Muslim League Mankada Panchayat president. He was the chief editor and general manager of Chandrika Daily. Moulavi also served as the state vice president of Muslim Educational Society.[citation needed]

Early life and education

Mankada Azeez Moulavi was born into the Mankada Thayyil family on July 15, 1931, the son of Thayyil Kammali Musliar, an Islamic scholar in Mankada, and Kunhathumma. He was the seventh of ten children. He attended Karkidakam L.P. School and Mankada Higher Elementary School. He passed the E.S.L.C. Examination in 1941 and commenced his religious studies at Darussalam Madrassa in Tirurangadi until 1948. He continued his studies at the Rouzthul Uloom Arabic college, then functioning at Manjeri and afterwards at Feroke. He passed the Afzal-Al-Ulema public examination in first class in 1953. He became an Arabic tutor at the same Arabic college and subsequently at the Oriental Residential School—now Farook High School—and continued there until 1957.

During 1957, Moulavi was appointed as an Arabic teacher at Mankada High School. On promotion to first-grade Arabic teacher, he transferred to Perinthalmanna High School. From 1957 to 1967, he further pursued his studies as a private candidate and passed the matriculation, Pre-Degree, and B.A. degree from Madras University.

Career

In 1967, Moulavi was appointed as a lecturer at Calicut Government Arts and Science College. In 1968, after resigning from government service, he opted for service in the M.E.S. (Muslim Educational Society) and joined as a lecturer at Ponnani M.E.S. College. Thereafter, he was transferred to Mampad M.E.S. College as a professor in 1972, and worked as a professor for 10 years and as principal of Mampad M.E.S. College for 5 years. He retired as principal of M.E.S. Mampad College in March 1987.

In 1987, Moulavi was offered the post of visiting professor of the chair of Islamic studies at Calicut University, simultaneously working as general manager and chief editor of Chandrika Daily. In 1989, he was selected and appointed as the principal of ‘Indian Islahi School,’ Al-Ain, U.A.E., remaining there for two years before returning to Mankada. On returning from the U.A.E., he was again appointed as the general manager and chief editor of Chandrika.

After leaving Chandrika, Moulavi dedicated his remaining life to the active supervision of the Mankada orphanage. He also organised an English-medium institution in Mankada, Al Ameen Senior Secondary School. He was a religious leader of Mankada and was involved in the construction of a mosque in Mankada town, Madeena Masjid.

Personal life

Moulavi married Fathima Zuhra and had three sons and four daughters.


Death

Moulavi died on August 12, 2007, after being admitted to a private hospital due to lung cancer. His body was buried at the Mankada Juma Masjid on August 13, 2007.
