Mankind vs. The Undertaker (Boiler Room Brawl)

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Mankind vs. The Undertaker in the Boiler Room Brawl, also known simply as The Boiler Room Brawl was a WWE professional wrestling match between Mankind and The Undertaker. It took place at the SummerSlam 1996 Pay-Per-View on August 18, 1996. It marked a turning point when Undertaker's long-time manager, Paul Bearer, betrayed him by hitting Undertaker with an urn and becoming an ally with Mankind, continuing the rivalry.[1][2]

Background[edit]

The night after WrestleMania 12, Mankind attacked the Undertaker.[3] After, they had fought in a few dark matches. However, the Boiler Room Brawl would be the first time a widespread match that was televised between the two would occur.

Match[edit]

The match type was the Boiler Room Brawl, a gimmick match for Mankind.[4] Both wrestlers would start in the arena's boiler room, and the winner would be the first to escape it. In this case, it would be the first wrestler to retrieve Paul Bearer's urn all the way in the ring. Undertaker is first seen cautiously entering and looking around the boiler room. However, Mankind ends up striking first, and the two beginning brawling inside. They continue brawling outside the boiler room, and walk all the way to the outside of the ring, fighting each other to get inside of it. Eventually, Undertaker whips the rope while Mankind is on it, causing Mankind to fly back to the floor. As the Undertaker walks in the ring to Bearer, he kneels down to receive the urn. However, Bearer instead turns his back as Mankind attacks Undertaker from behind. Bearer then, with Mankind, kicks the Undertaker. Undertaker, injured, tries to get up by crawling to Paul Bearer and attempting to stand up, where Paul Bearer infamously hits the Undertaker on the head with the urn. Mankind then wins the match.

Legacy[edit]

After the match, Undertaker would continue to feud with Mankind and, after the Boiler Room Brawl, Paul Bearer. Undertaker would then face Mankind at In Your House 11: Buried Alive in a Buried Alive match. Undertaker would lose, being buried alive, which would end his 'Deadman' gimmick.[5]
