Production
Development
Mankolangal was conceived as a social drama focusing on environmental themes and the plight of marginalised communities. The film was written by Manikandan Pattambi, who also played the lead role, marking his debut as both actor and screenwriter.[2]
Filming
The film was shot in Kumbhara Kota near Pattambi, Kerala, with cinematography handled by Praveen Panicker. The production aimed to authentically portray the lifestyle and customs of Kerala's tribal communities. Art direction was provided by Disney Venu and Samkutty Pattamkari.[3] The film director Sanal Kumar Sasidharan started his career in films as an art assistant in this film.
Release
Mankolangal was released on 24 June 2001 in India. The film received a limited theatrical release.
Reception
A review of the Locarno International Film Festival in Swissinfo.ch said that Mankolangal offered a "troubled look into the future".[4]
