Manu Madan is an Indian pulmonologist specialising in interventional pulmonology, critical care, and sleep medicine. He serves as Senior Consultant in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at Medanta- The Medicity, Noida. [1] He is the editor of Pulmonary Update, a reference textbook for postgraduate trainees in pulmonary medicine, [2] and serves as personal physician to Jagdeep Dhankhar, former Vice President of India.
Early life and education
Madan completed his MBBS from Maulana Azad Medical College, University of Delhi. He subsequently pursued postgraduate training in pulmonary medicine at the Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute, University of Delhi, where he was awarded a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree. [1][3] He completed super-specialisation (DM) in Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi (AIIMS).[1][4] He secured Rank 1 in the DM entrance examination at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi.
Career
While training at the Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute, Madan was quoted by Agence France-Presse in a 2015 wire story on the health consequences of air pollution in Delhi, published in advance of the COP21 Paris Climate Conference. He described patient volumes of more than 600 a day at his outpatient department and noted that "children suffer the most because of less immunity" due to Delhi's air pollution.[3]
Following his DM at AIIMS, Madan served as Assistant Professor in the Department of Pulmonary Medicine at Vardhman Mahavir Medical College and Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi from 2021 to 2024. During his tenure there, he was the first to perform an endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) cryobiopsy at the institution. He subsequently joined Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket, as a consultant at the Max Institute of Respiratory, Critical Care ,and Sleep Medicine from May 2024 to November 2025.
Madan currently serves as Senior Consultant in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at Medanta — The Medicity, Noida. He additionally serves as personal physician to Jagdeep Dhankhar, the former Vice President of India. In a 2025 interview with The Time s of India for World COPD Day, Madan highlighted the shifting demographic trends of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, warning that it is increasingly observed at earlier ages due to environmental pollution, vaping, and domestic biomass fuel exposure rather than traditional tobacco usage alone.[5] In a 2026 digital video feature with Navbharat Times, he outlined common clinical triggers and dietary hazards for asthma management and distinguished the medical functions of preventer versus reliever inhalers. In a 2026 interview with Business Standard, Madan commented on the physiological effects of chronic sleep deprivation and "social jet lag", stating that "sleep doesn't work like a credit card bill you can clear later".[7] The same year, in an interview with CNN-News18, he discussed at-home lung function tests and the clinical concept of "lung age", cautioning that such tests should be regarded as screening tools and "cannot replace medical evaluation, imaging, or comprehensive pulmonary function tests". [8]

Madan has authored or co-authored over 50 publications in national and international peer-reviewed journals, and his work has been indexed in PubMed. His primary research interests include interventional pulmonology, endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS), differential diagnosis of granulomatous lung disease, post-COVID-19 respiratory care, and tuberculosis epidemiology. Interventional Pulmonology & Diagnostics
A significant portion of Madan's research focuses on advanced diagnostic modalities for mediastinal lesions and granulomatous lung diseases. In a 2022 first-author study published in Lung India, he evaluated the role of ultrasound elastography characteristics in successfully differentiating between tuberculosis and sarcoidosis during EBUS-TBNA procedures.[4] His earlier diagnostic research in Lung India included clinical case evaluations of distinct radiological signs, such as eggshell calcification in thoracic imaging. [10]
Through his collaborative work at tertiary care centers in India, Madan co-authored the COLD-FORCEPS trials. These clinical studies compared the diagnostic yields and safety profiles of transbronchial cryo-nodal biopsies against traditional intra-nodal forceps biopsies and standard needle aspirations for evaluating complex mediastinal masses.[11][12] He has also published research on alternative interventional approaches, including the clinical utility of transesophageal bronchoscopic ultrasound-guided cryobiopsy (EUS-B-Cryo) for securing diagnosis in critical airway obstructions. Pulmonary Function & COVID-19 Trends
Madan's research has evaluated the baseline physiological parameters of respiratory metrics within the Indian population. He co-authored a clinical study exploring the impact of switching from Caucasian to localised Indian reference equations when interpreting spirometry data, noting distinct clinical shifts in how airway restriction and obstruction severities are classified.[14]
During the COVID-19 pandemic, his research expanded toward tracking viral complications and epidemiological metrics. In a first-author study published in Public Health, he investigated whether historical tuberculosis infection profiles or BCG vaccinations correlated with immunogenic protection against the severity of acute COVID-19 illness.[9] He also co-authored evaluations tracking the long-term clinical spectrum of post-COVID-19 syndrome and its ongoing respiratory effects.
