Manuel María Aldunate Solar[lower-alpha 1] (18 April 1860 – 3 September 1891) was a Chilean lawyer, military officer and politician who served as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Worship and Colonization under President José Manuel Balmaceda.[1]
He also served as intendant of Malleco Province and as a military commander during the 1891 Chilean Civil War.[1]
Early life
Aldunate was born in Santiago on 18 April 1860. He studied at the Instituto Nacional and later at the Faculty of Law of the University of Chile, qualifying as a lawyer on 15 May 1882.[1]
He subsequently became involved in mining and nitrate activities in Tarapacá. Aldunate served as a director and legal counsel of the Compañía Sud Americana de Vapores, director and manager of the Compañía del Telégrafo Americano, and manager of the Sociedad Minera Desengaño de Batuco. He was also a director of the National Mining Society (SONAMI).[1]
Political career
Aldunate was appointed intendant of Malleco Province on 18 November 1890. At the beginning of the 1891 Chilean Civil War, he organized a military division in support of President José Manuel Balmaceda and became commander-in-chief of the 6th Division of the Army of the South.[1]
On 20 May 1891, Balmaceda appointed him Minister of Foreign Affairs, Worship and Colonization. During the conflict, he was also appointed government minister in campaign in Coquimbo Province, where he was tasked with opposing the Congressional forces. He later returned to central Chile to reinforce government troops.[1]
Following the defeat of Balmaceda's forces at the Battle of Placilla, Aldunate surrendered at Catapilco. He was executed without trial at Palmilla, near La Calera, on 3 September 1891, aged 31.[1]
