Marathi Ekikaran Samiti - Maharashtra Rajya is a non-political organization in the state of Maharashtra. Founded on June 6, 2015, this movement advocates for Marathi identity, language, education in Marathi medium, and employment opportunities for local Marathi people within Maharashtra.[1][2][3][4][5]

History

The Marathi Ekikaran Samiti organisation was founded on June 6, 2015. Govardhan Sakharam Deshmukh is the president of the Marathi Ekikaran Samiti and Pradeep Jairam Samant is the working president of the organization.[6][7][8] The organization's area of ​​operation is the entire Maharashtra.

Agitations

The Marathi Ekikaran Samiti has long demanded that a Marathi language building be built in Maharashtra, and the organization has made demands and protests for this from time to time.[9] The organization has consistently raised its voice on the issue of Marathi people being denied housing in Mumbai and its suburbs.[10][11]

The name of the office on the front of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) office in Ballard Estate in South Mumbai was written only in English and Hindi. The Marathi Ekikaran Samiti complained to the District Magistrate about this and got the signboard changed to Marathi.[12][13] The committee has strongly opposed the Hindi Language Bhavan to be built in Mira Bhayandar.[14][15]

The Marathi Ekikaran Samiti has provided jobs to 250 teachers who were removed from the teacher recruitment process as primary education is in Marathi medium. For this, the committee discussed with the then Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and followed up with Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Chahal to get all the teachers their rightful jobs.[16]

In July 2025, the Marathi Ekikaran Samiti played a significant role in a high-profile protest in Mira-Bhayandar, a suburb of Mumbai, in response to a linguistic controversy involving the Marathi language.[17][18][19][20][21]

In April 2025, the Marathi Ekikaran Samiti protested against a proposal to make Hindi compulsory in Maharashtra schools starting from Class 1. The organization submitted a formal request to the state government to withdraw the decision, arguing that it undermined the linguistic identity of Maharashtra and the interests of Marathi-speaking students.[22][23]
