Marcel Wantz
Marcel Wantz was born in Paris on 22 October 1911 and died there in August 1979.[1] As a young typographer, he lodged with the artist Jean Hélion. Through Hélion he came into contact with Theo van Doesburg, who at the end of 1929 was conducting discussions in order to set up what became the Art Concret grouping of abstract artists. Although scarcely an artist himself and, as Jean Hélion reports, “taking no part in our purely artistic discussions”, Wantz agreed to sign their manifesto. Nothing of his appeared in the magazine they published in April 1930, however. His main interest was in politics and he soon left artistic circles to pursue his career there.[2]
Later on, Wantz joined the newspaper Le Monde, eventually becoming their chief proof reader. He was also a director of the Syndicat des correcteurs (proof readers’ trade union) and a delegate of the leftist CGT (General Confederation of Labour).[3]
