March Networks Corporation is a Canadian-based developer and manufacturer of IP-video surveillance and video-based business intelligence technologies and related products for use in the banking,[2] commercial, education, healthcare,[3] industrial, public sector, retail,[4] transportation,[5] and other markets. Operating globally from its corporate headquarters in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada where it was founded in 2000,[6] it maintains regional offices in Australia, Italy, Mexico, Singapore, United Arab Emirates (UAE), and the United States.[1]

History[edit]

March Networks was founded in 2000[6] in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada by serial entrepreneur Terry Matthews.[7] As a startup, the company focused on developing video software and purpose-built digital video recording solutions for multiple vertical markets.

In 2005, the company completed ISO 9001:2000 certification through the Quality Management Institute, a division of the CSA Group standards organization.[8] That same year, it also filed plans for,[9] and completed, an initial public offering (IPO).[10] It began trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) on April 27, 2005.[11]

In November 2010, the company launched a new Partner Connections initiative for its certified dealer network, offering various sales and marketing and training resources and tools.[12]

In 2012, March Networks was acquired by Infinova Canada Ltd.[13]

Between 2002 and 2016, the company was awarded multiple patents for technologies including the remote configuration of digital video surveillance system elements; the automatic configuration of camera to video management server connections; hierarchical data storage; automatic camera health monitoring system and method; and video surveillance system content management, among others.[14]

Expansion[edit]

Since its founding, March Networks has expanded its operations internationally through the opening of regional offices. Its first regional office opened in Atlanta, Georgia in 2000. That same year, the company also expanded its technology base with a series of acquisitions, beginning with emergency response solutions provider Elcombe Systems Limited in November 2000.[15]

In January 2001, March Networks acquired content management platform developer MainSource Software,[16] followed by its acquisition of media technology company InfoPreneur, Inc. in May 2001.[17]

In 2005, the company expanded into Latin America, with the opening of its office in Cuajimalpa, Mexico.

In July 2006, March Networks acquired Trax Retail Solutions, a developer of enterprise-grade loss prevention, store operations control, and profit optimization software.[18]

In April 2008, March Networks acquired IP video surveillance company Cieffe S.p.A. and its subsidiary, Insignis Technologies S.r.l. Cieffe in Milan, Italy, which now serves as the company's European headquarters.[19]

March Networks expanded its global footprint again in 2009, opening regional sales offices in Dubai, UAE, and Sydney, Australia.

In 2014, the company opened a regional office in Singapore.

Acquisition[edit]

In December 2011, March Networks announced it was being acquired by Monmouth Junction, New Jersey-based video surveillance equipment maker Infinova for C$90.1 million, providing it with access to the growing Chinese market.[20] The acquisition was completed in March 2012, with the company serving as an independent subsidiary of Infinova.[21]

Products[edit]

Recorders[edit]

March Networks manufactures Linux OS-based hybrid and tribrid video recorders that support its own IP, analog, and HD analog surveillance cameras, as well as a variety of third-party cameras through the Open Network Video Interface Forum (ONVIF) and direct integrations.[22]

The company also makes ruggedized video recorders for bus and passenger rail applications.[23] Its transit recorders are Wi-Fi and 4G-enabled, so video can be downloaded remotely. The devices integrate with vehicular computer aided dispatch, automatic vehicle location, and GPS data, and comply with environmental, electromagnetic, and shock/vibration regulatory standards.

Video Management Software[edit]

March Networks produces fully-distributed, single-server, and entry level video management software.[24]

Cameras[edit]

March Networks produces ONVIF-compliant IP cameras,[25] as well as analog, and HD analog cameras. It also makes ruggedized mobile cameras and ATM cameras. Many of its cameras support high dynamic range video, and include features such as infrared LEDs.

Business Intelligence Software[edit]

March Networks develops and sells video-based business intelligence software.[26] The applications integrate surveillance video with ATM and teller transaction data in banking, and point-of-sale (POS) transaction data in retail applications, as well as other analytics and data. The products are used to deter theft and fraud, and investigate ATM skimming, cash harvesting, jackpotting, sweethearting, and organized retail crime.

Hosted Video Services[edit]

The company also offers video software as a service (SaaS) for retailers seeking to outsource system component management and maintenance.[27]

Mobile Applications[edit]

March Networks offers mobile applications, including GURU, which delivers technical support for its products via smartphone, and Command Mobile for live and archived video viewing.[28]

Research and industry activities[edit]

March Networks maintains research and development Centers of Excellence at its global headquarters in Ottawa, Canada, as well as in Milan, Italy, and Shenzhen, China.

Additionally, the company commissions and publishes research with partner firms such as Ipsos.[29]
