Marco Imbang Umgeher is an Austrian skier.
Early life
Umgeher was born on December 16, 2001, to an Austrian father, Hannes Umgeher, and a Filipino mother, Gemma Francisco Imbang-Umgeher, who is a native of Sebaste, Antique. He also has an older sister, Jessica.[1] His father is a businessman while his mother is a housewife who migrated to Austria in the 1990s and acquired Austrian citizenship a year before his birth.[2] His family resides in the Austrian town of Alland.[3]
He went to primary school in Alland from 2008 to 2012 and attended New Middle School Alland for his secondary studies from 2012 to 2016.[1]
Career
Umgeher has been skiing since the age of 5. He has been practicing the disciplines of Winter Slalom, Giant Slalom and Super-G. Umgeher first received attention in Rohr im Gebirge, Wiener Neustadt-Land, where he finished in first place at the Schilowsky Kidscup Ost in the slalom race. He later received attention from the Austrian Skiing Association (ÖSV).[1]
Umgeher has been winning in ski racing competitions since 2009. In 2016, he won first place at the Lower Austrian Championship Combination and in the Lower Austrian Championship, Hochkar, Slalom[4]
Change of sporting nationality
It was reported in July 2016, that the Philippine Sports Commission will support Umgeher, after he expressed an intention to represent the Philippines at the World Cup and the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics.[3]
Since 2016, Umgeher's mother is working to acquire Filipino citizenship for him in order for him to acquire a Philippine passport so he can represent the Philippines in international competitions such as the Winter Asian Games and Winter Olympics. The Austrian government has given him permission to acquire Filipino citizenship without losing his Austrian citizenship.[2]
