Markus James is an American blues singer, songwriter and guitarist.[1] With his band Markus James and the Wassonrai, he mixes American "Hill Country" style blues[2] with traditional sounds of the Wassoulou and Sonrai peoples of Mali.[3] According to NPR Music's Banning Eyre, the band explores "fascinating and provocative" connections between the musical traditions of the U.S. and Mali.[4]
