Marcus Lyle Brown is an actor and film producer. His film credits include Eve's Bayou (1997), Monster's Ball (2001), The Great Debaters (2007), Battleship (2012), 12 Years a Slave (2013), and The Host (2013).[1][2] He has also produced the films A Sort of Homecoming (2015)[3] and Dirt Road to Lafayette (2018).[4]
Early life and education
Brown studied at Louisiana State University, where he earned bachelor's degrees in theatre and communication in 1995 and a Master of Fine Arts in performance in 1996.[5][6] His master's production thesis examined the role of Bynum Walker in August Wilson's play Joe Turner's Come and Gone.[7]
Career
Brown developed his screen career while remaining in Louisiana.[8] A 2019 profile reported that a 1996 encounter with filmmaker Steven Soderbergh helped persuade him that he could build a career in the state rather than relocate.[5] His early film credits included Eve's Bayou (1997), Lush (2000), Monster's Ball (2001), Venom (2005), Big Momma's House 2 (2006), Premonition (2007), and The Great Debaters (2007).[1] In 2007, Brown's company Believe Entertainment created and managed the Lafayette Entertainment Initiative, which was intended to promote Lafayette as a destination for creative-content production.[5]
By 2013, Brown's work included an appearance in 12 Years a Slave and television roles in Nashville, Drop Dead Diva and Star-Crossed. That year, he and Yvette Brown were also seeking financing to produce A Sort of Homecoming, written by Brown's former school debate teammate Lynn Reed and planned for production in Lafayette.[2]
Brown subsequently co-produced A Sort of Homecoming, directed by Maria Burton, with Yvette Brown, Reed and Sean Rankin.[3] After the film was completed, he continued working as a producer and in 2015 was developing Dirt Road to Lafayette.[9] The film, released in 2018, credits Brown, Yvette Brown and Carole Sheridan as producers.[4]
