Marek Varga
Marek Varga is a Slovak career diplomat serving as Permanent Representative of Slovak Republic to NATO since August 2024. He previously served concurrently as Slovak Ambassador to Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq and as Chargé d’Affaires to Syria. He was a member of Slovak Republic team that processed the country's admission into European Union and NATO and played a significant role in the ascendancy of Slovak to the EU presidency in 2016.[1][2]
Career
Varga began his diplomatic career as a member of the European Union Monitoring Mission in Eastern Slavonia region and the Brčko Corridor in former Yugoslavia from 1994 to 1995. He served as a military expert in Slovak Embassy in Washington D.C. from 2001 to 2005 and participated in the Slovak Armed Forces contingency operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Varga served as deputy director of Military Intelligence Service from 2011 to 2012. He was Head of the Intelligence Analysis Branch of the EU Military Staff at the European External Action Service in Brussels.[3] In 2020, he was appointed Slovak Ambassador to Iraq, Jordan and Lebanon serving until August 2024 when he was appointed Permanent Representative of Slovak to NATO.[4][5]
