Maria Anto & Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven Art Prize – international award for female visual artists, awarded since 2018, by the Fundacja Miejsce Sztuki[1] in Warsaw, Poland.

History[edit]

The award was established by artist for artists. [2]

The inauguration of the award took place in 2018 as part of the retrospective of Maria Anto's work at the Zachęta National Gallery of Art (7 November 2017 - 4 February 2018)[3]) and in cooperation with the Arton Foundation.[4] Its official establishment took place in Zachęta on 1 February 2018, during the "Panel of Malarek", organized by Janin at the end of the exhibition (in the discussion entitled Painter. Painter. Painting was attended by Agnieszka Brzeżańska, Zuzanna Hertzberg, Olga Wolniak and Dorota Podlaska, and the moderator was Anna Sańczuk).[5][6] The announcement of the first winners and the award ceremony took place on 15/12/2018.[7][8][9] Establishing the Prize in 2018 was also part of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the acquisition of full electoral rights by Polish women.[10]

The next edition took place in 2019 in Muzeum Sztuki Nowoczesnej / Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw, and another one in 2020 at the ZOOM online meeting.

It is the first international art award in Poland.[11] Initially, it was planned as a partially socially financed project.[12]

Aim[edit]

The aim of the award is to promote the creativity of women, in particular, socially engaged artists. As indicated by the organizers, the purpose of the Award is "to support and appreciate outstanding achievements in the field of contemporary art and border areas, border visual arts, but also to promote in the field of art the attitudes of people working in parallel for the benefit of others: the environment, environment, values, modernity and democracy.[7]

In the first few editions, the award is intended only for women, the purpose of which is to compensate for the gender gap in art. As the Award Committee argues: "We want to add value and value important female artists in Poland and abroad, to compensate for the scandalous imbalance between the appreciation of art and the attitudes of female and male artists. Among female artists, we see a huge potential for breakthrough, radical, modern attitudes".[8]

Matrones[edit]

The matrons of the awards are the Polish painter Maria Anto (1936-2007) and the famous German Dadaist Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven (1874-1927), who were very popular in their time of activity and are now less recognizable.

The award date was established on December 15th each year - the day being both the exact anniversary of Anto's birth and the anniversary of von Freytag's death.
