Mario Ruben Alvarez

Mario Rubén Álvarez Benítez (Potrero Yvaté, Veinticinco de Diciembre, San Pedro, September 7, 1954) is a bilingual poet (Spanish, Guaraní), Paraguayan journalist, translator, teacher, researcher of Paraguayan music and lecturer.[1][2] He is a full member of the Guaraní Language Academy, since its foundation in 2012.[3]

Biography[edit]

Some of his poems were set to music by various composers. Among them Yvága Potrero Yvate (music by José Magno Soler), Che sy rovetâme (music by Ángel Benítez), Ko´ê rekávo (music by Joaquín Villalba) and others.

He selected the works of Carlos Federico Abente included in the anthology titled Ñemitÿ (2009). The Uruguayan writer Julio Brum translated his poem From Him The Secret of Yerba Mate as Ka'a omoñemíva (2017).

In April 2017 he offered conferences at the Santo Domingo International Book Fair, Dominican Republic.

In May 2017 he spoke about the use of Guarani in the works of Augusto Roa Bastos at the Casa de las Américas in Havana, Cuba.

He won the young poetry contests of the Institute of Hispanic Culture, of Asunción, in 1977 and 1979.

He is a member of the Society of Writers of Paraguay, the PEN Club Paraguay, the Union of Journalists of Paraguay and the Guaraní Language Academy.

He is the author of The Voices of Memory: Stories of Paraguayan Popular Songs , a work published in ten volumes between 2003 and 2009. He has also published biographies on Carlos Miguel Jiménez, Carlos Federico Abente and The Larramendia Brothers.[1]
