Mark David Gerson is the award-winning author and creator of the series The Legend of Q'ntana and The Sara Stories, as well as more than a dozen other books.

Life and career[edit]

A Montreal native, Gerson spent over a decade as a freelance writer, editor, and broadcaster. Between the years of 1981 and 1994, he contributed pieces to the Montreal Star, The Gazette (Montreal), the Ottawa Journal, The Globe and Mail and the Toronto Star, as well as to a variety of magazines and to CBC Radio and Radio Canada International. During much of his time in Canada he was the Canadian stringer for The Chronicle of Higher Education and Times Higher Education, then known as The Times Higher Education Supplement.

It was also in Canada that he started writing his first novel, The MoonQuest, beginning it in Toronto and writing most of the first two drafts in Nova Scotia.

Gerson left Canada in 1997 and has since lived in various parts of the United States. He has one daughter.

He is openly gay. His series, The Sara Stories, features queer characters and themes, and he recounts his experience of coming out in his memoir, Acts of Surrender.

Written Works[edit]

Gerson is the author of the fantasy series The Legend of Q'ntana. The series includes four books: The MoonQuest (2007), The StarQuest (2013) The SunQuest (2014), and The Bard of Bryn Doon (2021).

In 2015, Gerson released the first instalment in his second series, The Sara Stories. To date there are three entries in the saga: Sara's Year, After Sara's Year and The Emmeline Papers. The series is set in London, Nova Scotia, and Gerson's native Montreal.

He has written three memoirs: Acts of Surrender: A Writer's Memoir (2012), Dialogues with the Divine: Encounters with My Wisest Self] (2013), and Pilgrimage: A Fool's Journey (2021).

His books on writing include Writer's Block Unblocked: Seven Surefire Ways to Free Up Your Writing and Creative Flow (2014), From Memory to Memoir: Writing the Stories of Your Life(2014), Organic Screenwriting: Writing for Film, Naturally (2014), and Birthing Your Book...Even If You Don't Know What It's About (2014).
