Life and career[edit]
A Montreal native, Gerson spent over a decade as a freelance writer, editor, and broadcaster. Between the years of 1981 and 1994, he contributed pieces to the Montreal Star, The Gazette (Montreal), the Ottawa Journal, The Globe and Mail and the Toronto Star, as well as to a variety of magazines and to CBC Radio and Radio Canada International. During much of his time in Canada he was the Canadian stringer for The Chronicle of Higher Education and Times Higher Education, then known as The Times Higher Education Supplement.

Gerson left Canada in 1997 and has since lived in various parts of the United States. He has one daughter.
He is openly gay. His series, The Sara Stories, features queer characters and themes, and he recounts his experience of coming out in his memoir, Acts of Surrender.
