Mark Oosterveen (born 1979) is an English actor, director and writer.[1][2] He is mainly known for being the associate writer/director and one of the main subjects of Grand Theft Hamlet.[3][4] He has also appeared in the Guy Ritchie film The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare starring Henry Cavill, and the Terence Davies film Benediction starring Jack Lowden. He attended the University of Reading and Drama Studio London.[5][6]
His television work includes the BBC series Silent Witness, the BBC series Casualty, the Western series Django for Sky, the fifth season of Unforgotten for ITV, the third season of The Girlfriend Experience for Amazon Prime Video, and the recurring character of Carl Rapley in the long-running BBC soap opera EastEnders. He has also worked extensively on stage, including for the Arcola Theatre, the Crucible Theatre, the Royal Exchange Theatre, the Soho Theatre, Theatre503, the Orange Tree Theatre and 59E59 Theaters in New York City.
Career
Grand Theft Hamlet
During the 2022 third COVID-19 lockdown in the UK, alongside his friend Sam Crane, Oosterveen co-directed and performed in a full production of the William Shakespeare play Hamlet within the live environment of the video game Grand Theft Auto Online.[7] This production later won the Innovation Award from the British theatre publication The Stage in January 2023. The process was depicted in the critically acclaimed, award-winning documentary Grand Theft Hamlet, co-directed by Pinny Grylls and Sam Crane.[8][9][10][11]
