Mark Yi-En Tuan (traditional Chinese: 段宜恩; born September 4, 1993) , popularly known as Mark Tuan or simply Mark (Hangul: 마크), is an American-born Taiwanese singer and rapper based in South Korea.[1] He is a member of South Korean boy group Got7 under JYP Entertainment since 2014.

Since May 2017, Mark has been sighted by fashion magazines in Korea, China and Thailand and has been featured in photo shoots consistently since.

Early Life[edit]

Mark was born in Los Angeles, CA to Raymond and Dorine Tuan. Other than a few years of his youth living in Brazil and Paraguay, he grew up primarily in California with older sisters Tammy and Grace and younger brother Joey. He attended Arcadia High School in Arcadia, CA until 2010 when he was scouted by a JYP Entertainment representative at school and was asked to audition.[2][3]

Mark successfully passed his audition after rapping Eminem's "When I'm Gone" and officially joined the company as a trainee in August of 2010 after completing 10th grade.[4]

Career[edit]

2011-2013: Pre-Debut[edit]

In 2011, shortly after arriving in Korea, Mark participated in two CFs for Olleh KT cell phones.[5][6] That same year, he also was part of ads for Reebok Classic's 2011 campaign with Yoo Ah-in and TWICE's Jihyo.[7][8]

His first major pre-debut appearance was on an episode of Mnet's reality-survival program WIN: Who Is Next, which aired on September 6, 2013.[9] Mark, alongside other male JYP Entertainment trainees (including Jackson, BamBam and Yugyeom of Got7), competed against the YG Entertainment trainees: Team A and Team B (now known as WINNER and iKON, respectively).[10]

2014-Present: Debut with GOT7[edit]

As a trainee under JYP Entertainment, Mark learned MAT (Martial Arts Tricking), gymnastics, rapping and dancing for over three years before his debut. On January 2, 2014,[11] Mark was revealed as a member of new boy group, Got7, and debuted with the song and music video for "Girls Girls Girls" on January 14, 2014.[12]

Got7 held their first concert on April 29, 2016 in Seoul where Mark debuted a special song "Higher", written with band-mate Jinyoung.[13]

On May 18, 2016, "Sanctuary", a short film by Bausch + Lomb Thailand starring Mark, BamBam and Jinyoung was released as promotion for their brand of contact lenses.[14]

In late May 2016, a convenience store food trend named after Mark (known as a "Mark Meal") started appearing online and created a viral sensation in Korea due to its taste and the convenience of ingredients. A "Mark Meal" (Hangul: 마크정식) consists of instant spicy rice cakes, Ottogi spaghetti ramen, garlic-flavored sausage and cheese; it was created by a fan looking to help Mark to rise on Korean search engines (such as Naver).[15] The popularity of the dish rose online even more after an episode of Weekly Idol on September 28, 2016 when Mark acknowledged the meal and made it himself for the first time on-air.[16]

In 2017, Mark guested on TV program Law of the Jungle in New Zealand (broadcast on SBS, from May 27 to June 19) himself for first time.[17][18]

Mark ranked fifth of the list of "100 Asian Heartthrobs of 2018".[19]
