Marooners is a multiplayer action party game. It entered Steam Early Access on 24 March 2015, after being approved through Steam Greenlight on 5 December 2014. The full release on Steam was on 15 September 2016.[1][2][3][4]
It was released for PlayStation 4 on 6 February 2018, and an Xbox One version was released on 18 February 2018.[5][6]
Gameplay[edit]
As with many party video games Marooners features a number of mini-games where the players compete to collect the most treasure they can. Whoever has the most treasure when all the mini-games have been completed wins the game. In the Marooners Chaos mode the mini-game being played changes randomly on a regular basis, instead of a mini-game being played to completion before moving onto the next one. When the game switches back to a mini-game which had been played earlier, the progress and state of players is the same as when the game switched away earlier. Each mini-game is played until only one player is left - they will have a chance to collect a bonus pot of gold, and after this the mini-game will not be switched to again. Some reviewers critiqued the Chaos mode as being frustrating.[5][6][5][7][8]
An Arena game mode was added on 19 August 2016, where players must push each other off the edges of the playable area, with the last one standing the winner. There are several different arena maps, as there are several different mini-games.[9]
A free update on 20 July 2017 added a Linear mode, where players play complete mini-games before switching to the next one. Arena mode and Linear mode were both featured in the console versions of the game at release. The update also added bots, new weapons, and additional arena maps.[10] Up to four players can play in local multiplayer, or six players in online multiplayer. AI controlled bots can be added in both single player and multiplayer.[11]

Marooners has a generally "mixed or average" reception according to video game review aggregator Metacritic.[12][13][14] Meanwhile, on whatoplay, the game received an aggregate score of 6.90 based on 238 gamer ratings[15].
