Ellis was born in Athens, Alabama and began his dance training at 6 years old. At 15, Ellis enrolled in the Alabama School of Fine Arts. Following graduation, he went on to dance with Ballet Austin, Images of Dance, and Orlando Ballet. Following his time at Orlando Ballet, Ellis performed the role of Pierrot Clown in Cirque du Soleil's production of La Nouba. As a member of the Actors' Equity Association, Ellis performed in Walt Disney World's Beauty and the Beast Live on Stage and Festival of the Lion King at Disney's Animal Kingdom.

Outside of performing, Ellis has set choreographic works for soloists and groups[1] in competitive, collegiate, and instructional dance settings. In 2011, Ellis founded ME Dance, Inc., a nonprofit organization located in Orlando, Florida focused on introducing innovating ideas through dance to grow Central Florida's arts community[2]. Originally, ME Dance solely reflected a performance group of local professional dancers. ME Dance presented its first production, Premiere, in September 2012 at the Garden Theatre[3]. The performing group is now known as Dance Theatre of Orlando[4] and ME Dance identifies the organization as a whole, which supports a multitude of arts endeavors[2].

Dance Theatre of Orlando presents original contemporary ballet works with the accompaniment of multimedia[5]. Ellis serves as the Artistic Director for the company, choreographing and staging all productions[6]. Since 2014, all productions have been held at ME Theatre[7], which Ellis operates. Outside of Dance Theatre of Orlando, ME Dance has grown to support the IDance Orlando Festival, the Orlando Tap Festival[8], and Florida Dance Scholarships.

In 2014, Ellis opened the first location of the Marshall Ellis Dance School (ME Dance School) in Orlando, Florida[9]. A second location opened in 2020 with a third location planned[10].
