    Marshmallow Duel is a 2D fighting game for MS-DOS by Duncan Gill.

    Gameplay[edit]

    Typical gameplay: three floating balloons can be spotted with two power-ups and one malus

    Two players fight in a randomly generated level made of platforms and poles with deadly marshmallow at the bottom (hence the name). Four platforms, two at the bottom and two at the top, with their connecting poles spawn always in a fixed position. The first player to get to win 3 matches wins the series.

    The melee fight is based on a simplistic yet effective collision system. Jumps, falls, rolls and direct contact cause the other player to bounce in different directions, ending on different floors and possibly in the deadly marshmallow.

    The games also features 10 power ups for the players to pick up in the form of floating balloons shot randomly by three cannons on the sides of the screen:

    • the gun gives the player the ability to shoot five straight rounds against the opponent. Each shot is letal but can be avoided simply by crouching;
    • the "1000 Volts" make the player flash and gives the ability to kill the opponent simply by touching. If the opponent is also charged with the same power up and the two touch, both discharge immediately and the effect is the same of normal melee;
    • the invisibility makes the player invisible on command;
    • the mine can be placed on any tile and explode killing whoever steps on it;
    • the boots grant the ability to jump higher;
    • the grenade is a throwable object with a parabolic trajectory which destroys any platform it explodes on;
    • the puck is a throwable explosive which travels on the floor in straight direction and, like the mine, kills anyone steps on it;
    • the warp teleport the player randomly in the level (with the risk of being teleported directly above the marshmallow);
    • the chute grants the player the ability of falling slowlier and in the desired direction;
    • finally, the hook gives the player the ability of climbing on a platform while falling or jumping.

    There are also two maluses in the same form of balloons as the power ups:

    • Death, instantly killing whoever it hits;
    • T.N.T., destroying the first platform(s) it floats onto;

    Release[edit]

    The game has been available on the internet as shareware for years. In the shareware version, only four powerups (gun, "1000 Volts", invisibility and mine), Death and T.N.T. were present, while statistics were not saved and character customization was not available. It was possibile to obtain a full version by sending 15$ to Duncan Gill.[1]
