Marta Ceko

Marta Čeko, PhD is a postdoctoral fellow in the Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience Laboratory at the University of Colorado, Boulder. She is known for her research in the brain imaging of pain.[1][2]

Early life and education[edit]

Marta Čeko was born in Zagreb, Croatia. At the age of 14, Čeko and her family resettled in Vienna, Austria due to the Balkan Conflict. There, she completed her undergraduate degree in Molecular Biology at the University of Vienna. Later, Čeko moved to Berlin, Germany to complete her masters degree in medical neuroscience at Universitätsmedizin Berlin. Dr. Čeko later earned her PhD at McGill University in Montreal, Canada.

Academic career[edit]

After completing her PhD in 2013, Dr. Čeko moved to Washington, D.C. to research at the Bethesda, MD campus of the National Institute of Health. Following this position, Marta moved to Boulder, Colorado as a post-doctoral research associate of Dr. Tor Wager in the Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience Laboratory at the University of Colorado, Boulder.

Research[edit]

Dr. Čeko studied pain in humans using psychophysical methods under Gary Lewin during her masters degree[3]. During her PhD studies, Dr. Čeko investigated the effects of chronic pain on brain function and structure within the insula in fibromyalgia patients[4][5][6][7][8][9][10], showing diminished somatosensation and how it can be regulated through yoga. Currently, her research is focused on exploring the basic brain mechanisms of aversive processing[1][11][12][2][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22]. She is particularly interested in applying predictive computational modeling approaches to fMRI, behavioral, and physiological data to determine brain processes underlying successful regulation of aversive experiences. The longer-term goal of this research is to develop brain and behavioral targets for individualized prevention and treatment of pain and related disorders.
