Mask shaming

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

"Mask Shaming" is a term referring to the shaming of people who would not wear face masks during the COVID-19 pandemic.[1] Mask shaming has been used as a mechanism to force people into compliance with wearing face masks in public. However "mask shaming" people into compliance has been met with a mixture of responses.[2] Some people support methods to coerce people into wearing masks, in the hope of mitigating the spread of the disease. While others have seen it as an infringement on personal sovereignty, or as a cloaked behavior people would employ to gain social prestige or 'virtue' points on social media.[3]

Mask shaming has had a close connection to the behavior of shaming people for not maintaining social distancing.[4] Finger-pointing individuals were often quick to publicize people who were not compliant on social media, inviting public and sometimes aggressive ridicule to unsuspecting persons. In addition to the dubiousness of positive effects of this shaming, people have been publicly attacked through social media while attempting to help others during the pandemic. Some of the victims of this shaming have included people simply going outside to help others in need, such as the homeless or elderly.[5]
