Listen to the song Master the Blaster or Buy it on amazon "Master the Blaster" is a 2021 song composed by Anirudh Ravichander, written and performed by Bjorn Surrao, for the 2021 film Master. It was released as part of the extended soundtrack from the film's album on 15 January 2021.[1] It was featured as JD's (played by Vijay) ringtone in the film. The song, despite being released as a bonus single, gained a phenomenal response and listed in top positions on leading music platforms.

Background

The film has JD listening to a reggae track. But Anirudh (Ravichander) wanted to compose one — he gave me the tune and asked me to pen the lyrics. I saw the scene, and began writing the song. Once we put it together, I felt it gave the star a different kind of swag, something fresh and cool. Even when we recorded the song, it had a nice energy. We were happy and chilled out while recording... I mean you usually don't get those vibes.

— Bjorn Surrao, on the composition of the track "Master the Blaster" in an interview with The Times of India.[2]

Composition

Anirudh Ravichander initially revealed that there would be two additional tracks released as part of the extended soundtrack album,[3] despite the original tracklist having 8 tracks, and was released during the film's audio launch on 15 March 2020.[4] Following the government's approval to resume post-production works of films which were halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Anirudh worked on the film's background score as well for the extended soundtrack.[5] The lyrical song "Master the Blaster" which released on 14 January 2021,[6] is a reggae[lower-alpha 1] track written and performed by independent musician Bjorn Surrao,[7] whom he previously worked with Anirudh in Velaikkaran (2017).[8][2]

Bjorn said that "The song is something fresh, chilled out, swag-gy and has a vibe."[2] Following his admiration for African and Jamaican sounds, Bjorn planned for composing a reggae and a dancehall track, which did not happen. During the re-recording of the soundtrack, Bjorn expressed his interest to create an original track featured as same as in the film, following Anirudh's instructions. The song was recorded at 4:00 A.M. morning and finished within two hours.[7]

Chart performance

Despite being released as a bonus single, the track received a phenomenal response upon release, with the lyrical video crossing 10 million views within four days,[2] and also topped the global iTunes charts.[9] The track also became one of the most streamed songs on Spotify, along with "Vaathi Coming", a week during its release, while the album also topped the most streamed Indian albums.[10][11]
