In 2026, Mateo Gallegos was mentioned in Santa Barbara's local newspapers such as the Santa Barbara Independent and Santa Barbara News-Press for his efforts to fight Santa Barbara Unified's ban of YouTube[1] and other Google services affecting more than 11,000[2] students.[3]
Gallegos claimed that socioeconomically disadvantaged students relied on YouTube access for educational purposes like studying for the SAT and ACT, and without access to those educational resources, students would be put at a disadvantage.
In his remarks to the school board, Gallegos referenced a study he conducted of over 300 local high school students.
