Mathieu Lapôtre
Mathieu G. A. Lapôtre is a planetary geologist and Assistant Professor in Geological Sciences at Stanford University.[1] He received his PhD from the California Institute of Technology in 2017.[2] His research focuses on geological processes that shape the landscapes of planetary bodies in the solar system,[3] and what can be learned about the Earth by exploring other worlds.[4][5][6][7] Lapôtre was part of the science team that operates NASA's Curiosity rover,[8] and discovered a new type of windblown sand ripples on Mars.[9][10][11][12][13][14] He estimated the volumes of water that carved bedrock canyons on Mars,[15] determined that the evolution of land plants on Earth slowed down the rate at which meandering rivers shift across floodplains by almost an order of magnitude,[16][17] and determined the lifespan and episodicity of river flows into Jezero crater, NASA's Perseverance rover's landing site on Mars.[18][19][20][21] In 2022, Lapôtre and his colleagues modeled the landscape formation on Titan, revealing an Earth-like alien world that explains how all of the sedimentary environments work together.[22][23][24] He has received several awards including the American Geophysical Union's Luna Leopold Early Career Award[25][26][27][28] and is a Kavli Fellow of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences.[29]
