Matt Brewer (born April 20, 1983 in Oklahoma City, OK) is an American jazz bassist and music teacher.[1]

Biography[edit]

Brewer grew up in Oklahoma City and Albuquerque, New Mexico in a musical family; his father and his grandfather are jazz musicians and his mother is radio DJ. At the age of three, he began to play the percussion, and he later received formal instrumental lessons at the age of ten when he switched to the bass during a summer camp of the Interlochen Center for the Arts.[2]He attended the Interlochen Arts Academy, where he studied classical bass and jazz performance.[2] He later continued his studies in New York City at the Juilliard School.[3] He placed third in the 2009 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition.[4][5]

Professionally, he has worked with Greg Osby, Jason Moran, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Lee Konitz, David Sánchez, Terence Blanchard, Aaron Parks, Yaron Herman, Vic Juris, Adam Rogers, Jeff "Tain" Watts, Antonio Sanchez, Shane Endsley, John Escreet, Rudresh Mahanthappa, and Ryan Keberle among others.[6][7][8][9][10]

He also performed with his own bands in jazz clubs such as the Jazz Gallery , Fat Cat , Cornelia Street Cafe and the Tribeca Performing Arts Center . In 2006 he presented the solo album Nardis . He is currently a member of the Steve Lehman Trio ( Dialect Fluorescent , Pi Recordings 2012). In the field of jazz, Brewer played 22 recording sessions between 2003 and 2011.[11] He teaches at the New School, as well as being a guest lecturer at the Banff Center.[2][12][13]
