Matt Johnson is a British writer of crime fiction and former Inspector with the Metropolitan Police Service. His writing incorporates his previous work as a servant of Her Majesty in both the British Army and the police service, including his experience with PTSD.[1]

Early life and education

Johnson was educated at Pinner County Grammar School near Harrow. He later joined the Territorial Army Royal Corps of Signals and then entered the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst on a Short Service Commission with the Royal Artillery.[2]

Career

Police career

In 1978, Johnson joined the Metropolitan Police as a uniformed constable.[3] Johnson served in a number of Headquarters and divisional roles and in 1991 was promoted to Inspector and transferred to Stoke Newington Police Station in North London.[4]

During his career, Johnson was involved with cases involving murders, shootings and terrorist bombings.[5] He was blown off his feet at the London Baltic Exchange bombing and among the first on the scene at the 1982 Regents Park bomb.[3] On 17 April 1984, Matt was driving a police traffic car when he was called to escort his mortally wounded friend and colleague, WPC Yvonne Fletcher, to hospital.[4] WPC Fletcher had been shot from the Libyan Embassy. Her death remains the only unsolved murder of a British police officer.[4]

Following exposure to further terrorist incidents including the St Mary Axe Bombing, Matt was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in 1998.[3] He retired from police work the following year.[4]

Writing career

Johnson underwent counselling for PTSD upon leaving the police service. His treatment included writing about his experiences, emotions and symptoms.[4] His writing grew into a hobby and eventually a writing career.[4] In 2012, Matt self-published a novel called Wicked Game based on a police inspector called Robert Finlay, a sufferer from PTSD. The rights to the novel were sold to Orenda Books through the Watson-Little Literary Agency of London. Wicked Game was republished by Orenda Books in March 2016 and became the top selling military thriller on both Amazon and Kobo. In May 2016 it was long-listed for the Crime Writers Association UK John Creasy New Blood Dagger Award.[4][6]

Wicked Game made the WHSmith list of Best Crime & Thriller Authors of All Time.[7] In 2017, Johnson released Deadly Game, the second book in the series, with End Game completing the trilogy series released in 2018.[8]
