Matthew Hlacar (born May 31, 2006) is a Canadian ice hockey left winger currently playing for the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). He was selected 217th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the seventh round of the 2025 NHL Entry Draft.
Early life
Hlacar was born in Binbrook, Ontario. He played youth hockey with the Hamilton Jr. Bulldogs and then moved on to the St. Catharines Falcons of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League (GOJHL).
Playing career
Junior
Hlacar played two full seasons with the St. Catharines Falcons, recording 38 points in both the 2022–23 and 2023–24 GOJHL seasons.
In 2024, he joined the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League. He posted 7 goals and 1 assist in 43 regular-season games, along with 62 penalty minutes. In the 2025 playoffs, he added 2 points and 38 penalty minutes in 14 games.
Draft and Leafs development camp
Hlacar was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the seventh round, 217th overall, of the 2025 NHL Entry Draft. Leafs scouting director Wes Clark described him as a “hard-nosed, competitive, big man who can skate.”
During the team’s 2025 development camp, Hlacar was involved in a physical altercation with fellow Leafs prospect Rhett Parsons, showcasing his aggressive and physical playing style.

Hlacar is a physical, power forward who stands 6-foot-3 and weighs 205 pounds. He is known for his checking, toughness, and willingness to fight. To improve his strength and on-ice intimidation, he trained with former boxing champion Steve Molitor.
