Matthias Gäumann (born 1970) is a Swiss materials scientist and engineer. Since 2021, he has been vice-president of operations at EPFL (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne).[1]
Career[edit]
Matthias Gäumann studied engineering at the EPFL and obtained a master's degree in materials science and engineering in 1995. In 1999, he earnd a PhD in physical metallurgy (1999) titled "Epitaxial laser metal forming of a single crystal superalloy" under the supervision of Wilfried Kurz.[2] During his PhD he was involved in the development of a 3D printing technique that allows to generate shapes on a single crystal substrate of nickel-based superalloy by layer deposition. The invention involves the control of solidification rate and temperature gradients when a jet of powder is melted by a laser beam and deposited on the substrate so that crystal growth occurs in an epitaxial manner.[3] In 2008, he earned an Master of Business Administration at the International Institute for Management Development in Lausanne.[4]
He then joined start-up Calcom SA, later acquired by ESI Group, that commercialized numerical simulation software using finite elements to test and optimize metallurgical manufacturing processes on a computer.[5] He is the co-founder of the start-up EELCEE SA, which transferred a technology for the mass production of low-cost composite materials.[6] In 2010, he joined the Bank Lombard Odier & Co to coordinate a scientific committee and specializes in funds dealing with equities, bonds and commodities, with a thematic approach for private clients and a quantitative approach for institutional clients, mainly in Switzerland and Asia.[7]
In 2020, he was named EPFL's Vice President for Human Resources and Operations first ad interim, before being appointed by the ETH Board as Vice President for Operations of the EPFL the same year.[1] In this function he manages human resources, information systems, site security and operations, infrastructure development and construction, procurement of goods and services, and catering.[8]
