Mattu University (MaU) (Script error: The function "langx" does not exist.; Script error: The function "langx" does not exist.) is a public university located in Metu, Oromia Region, Ethiopia.[3]. Established to expand access to tertiary education and meet the country's rapidly growing demand for highly skilled professionals [4], the university offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs across a range of disciplines, including agriculture, natural sciences, health sciences, engineering, and social sciences.

The Ministry of Education’s, Differentiating the Higher Education System of Ethiopia: A National Study Report, classifies Ethiopian universities into three categories: Research Universities, Comprehensive Universities, and Applied Science Universities.[5] Mattu University is recognized as a Comprehensive University, emphasizing a balanced focus on teaching and research activities.The university engages in academic and research activities, partners at both national and international levels, supporting joint research projects, academic conferences, student and faculty exchanges, and capacity-building initiatives.[6] [7]

History

Mattu University was established in 2011 G.C. by the Ethiopian government under the Council of Ministers Regulation No. 239/2011.[8] [4] The university is accountable to the Ministry of Education (MoE).

The institution was originally named Mettu University from 2011 to 2022. In 2022, the name was officially revised to Mattu University in line with the standardization of institutional naming across the country.

Mattu University began academic operations in 2011 by enrolling a few hundred undergraduate students. Over the years, it has experienced significant growth and currently serves more than 10,000 students across its two campuses. The university offers undergraduate, graduate, and PhD programs across various disciplines. These programs are structured under eight colleges and four schools in two campuses—Metu and Bedele—supported by over 800 academic staff.

Mattu University offers undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs across various disciplines. The university comprises multiple academic units organized into colleges and schools, including fields such as agriculture, natural sciences, health sciences, social sciences, and technology.[9][10]

The institution operates on two campuses: the main campus in Metu town, covering 165 hectares, and a satellite campus in Bedele, which spans 80 hectares. Research and Publication

Mattu University conducts research through the Directorate of Research, Publication, Ethics and Dissemination, which coordinates research support, ethics oversight, and dissemination activities.[13] The institution has identified nine priority thematic areas for research: agriculture, environment and natural resources; natural sciences; engineering and technology; education; rural and urban development; social sciences; business and economics; legal issues; and indigenous knowledge.[13][14]

By 2023, the university reported completing more than 600 research projects, most of which were short-term studies.[13] It also operates agricultural research stations in Buno Bedele and Ilu Aba Bor zones, focusing on improved crop varieties and livestock breeds intended to support regional agricultural development.[14]

In 2021, Mattu University launched the Ethiopian Journal of Applied Sciences (EJAS), a peer-reviewed series of journals covering multiple fields. These include: EJAS – Journal of Science and Technology, which publishes in natural sciences, computational sciences, and engineering.[15] EJAS – Journal of Health Sciences, which publishes in public health and clinical medicine.[16] EJAS – Journal of Agriculture and Natural Resource Management, which covers agricultural sciences, food security, and environmental resource management.[17]

Research Center

Mattu University operates agricultural research stations at several sites in the Oromia Region, where investigations are carried out on crops including coffee, avocado, banana, teff, wheat, and sweet potato.[14] The university also conducts livestock research programs, including work on sheep and dairy cattle breeding.[14]

Technology Transfer and Community Engagement (TTCE)

Mattu University’s TTCE is a unit under the Office of the Vice President for Academic, Research, Technology Transfer, and Community Engagement. The main areas of responsibility in line with national policies and Higher Education Proclamation No. 1152/2019.[18][19] It includes: Coordinating community engagement services across diverse sectors such as education, environment, health, agriculture, and legal aid[20]; Organizing demand-driven training and consultancy offerings[21][22]; Managing outreach programmes and technology transfer projects; Overseeing community service initiatives[23]

Internationalization and Partnership

Mattu University pursues internationalization through institutional partnerships and collaborations with both national and international organizations. These collaborations are intended to promote knowledge exchange, expand research capacity, and align higher education with sustainable development goals.[24]

International and national collaboration is managed by the Directorate of Internationalization and Partnerships (IZN), which is responsible for facilitating academic cooperation, developing agreements with universities abroad, and supporting institutional networks.[24] Recent partnership activities have included memoranda of understanding with higher education institutions such as Acharya Nagarjuna University in India and other regional universities in Ethiopia.[25]

Public & International Relations Executive

Mattu University operates a community-oriented FM radio station—95.6 FM—which broadcasts from its main campus in Mettu. Launched in 2017, it was the first operational community radio station in the area.[47] The station serves listeners in Mettu and surrounding districts, extending to parts of western Oromia including Kellem Wollega.[47]

Programming is delivered in both Afan Oromo and Amharic, reflecting linguistic diversity, and the station offers campus news, educational content, and community-focused programs. A locally selected board, drawing representation from both the university and local communities, governs the station.[47] The station provides a platform for student participation, public information dissemination, and academic discourse, aligning with broader principles of community broadcasting in Ethiopia.[47]

Rankings

Mattu University is officially recognized by the Ministry of Education of Ethiopia as a public higher education institution. It is classified as a comprehensive university and is listed in several international higher education directories.[48][49]
